The Journey

My name is Katherine, I’m from Bolivia, and I recently graduated with a Master’s in Global Studies with a major in Sustainability from Jönköping University. My background is in international cooperation, and before coming to Sweden, I worked with the UN World Food Programme on projects addressing climate change resilience, water scarcity, and food security for vulnerable and indigenous communities. That experience really shaped me, because I saw how essential planning, coordination, and sustainability are for long-term impact.

During my studies in Sweden, I had the chance to collaborate with the Stockholm Environment Institute and SIANI, where I supported research, policy briefs, and stakeholder engagement in areas like WASH and sustainable agriculture. Those experiences gave me the opportunity to connect academic research with practical solutions and strengthened my interest in sustainability governance.

I chose Sweden because of its strong commitment to sustainability, global collaboration, and inclusive policies, and it has been the perfect environment to grow both personally and professionally. Now I want to use this knowledge and experience to continue contributing to projects that address environmental and social challenges in an international context.

Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP) Details

I was honored to be awarded the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP), a highly competitive program with thousands of applicants each year. In 2023, I was part of the approximately 290 students from all over the world who were selected. The scholarship covers full tuition, travel expenses, and a monthly living stipend, which makes it possible to fully focus on studies and integration. Additionally, the program offers seminars, leadership training, and networking opportunities that connect us with inspiring professionals and changemakers worldwide to strengthen our skills and to grow as global leaders.

Educational Background

I hold a bachelor’s degree in communication from Bolivian Catholic University, where I focused on communication strategies for social change, project management, and multimedia storytelling,  skills that became the foundation for my work in international cooperation. This background prepared me to engage critically with global development issues, making the transition to a master’s in sustainability and social change a natural step.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Jönköping University?

I first learned about my current program and the Swedish Institute Scholarship through the mentoring platform Tu Beca Bolivia. I worked with a former scholarship recipient who guided me step-by-step, from selecting the right programs to refining my motivation letter.

  • Finding Information: I spent weeks researching universities in Sweden, reviewing course curricula, and reading student testimonials to understand both the academic and cultural experience.
  • Standardized Tests: I took the TOEFL, which was required by my chosen universities. Preparing to achieve the requirement score took me 3 attempts over a period of a year.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP)?

The Swedish Institute Scholarship focuses on leadership and sustainability, so it was essential for me to demonstrate both my professional achievements and my strong commitment to sustainable development. To prepare, I first drew a clear line between my past, present, and future, showing what I had already accomplished, why I wanted to pursue this program, and how I intended to use the knowledge and experience gained to create impact afterwards. Then, I gathered all the required documents, such as recommendation letters and work certificates, and carefully crafted my motivation letter. In it, I connected my professional journey to Sweden’s values of global cooperation and sustainability, highlighting specific projects I had led, the impact they generated, and how further studies could help amplify those results. Finally, I made sure everything was presented clearly in the official templates and formats before submitting my application.

How Was Your Experience at Jönköping University?

Jönköping University has a vibrant, international community. In my program, we are mostly international students, which makes class discussions rich with perspectives from all over the world. The teaching style is self-directed, with few lectures but plenty of projects, debates, and field visits. I’ve loved how professors incorporate examples from multiple continents, even Bolivian and Latin American cases, which made me feel represented academically.

How Do You Rate Jönköping University Academically and Why?

The academic environment has a strong focus on practical skills and real-world applications, which I truly value. At the same time, I believe that a more rigorous academic demand, for example, deeper theoretical requirements or higher expectations in research, could give the institution greater status and recognition compared to other universities.

How Does Jönköping University Support International Students?

There’s an active international student support system, from housing assistance and welcome programs to cultural activities and career services. Social events like “Culture Day” have been great opportunities to share my Bolivian heritage and learn from others.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English?

Yes, all of my classes were in English.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I think what made my application stand out was having a very clear motivation and passion. I knew exactly why I wanted to study, how my past experiences in food security and climate resilience shaped me, and how my future goals were connected to this program. When you can show that your academic path is not just a random choice but part of a bigger personal and professional journey, it makes your application stronger. My advice to future applicants is to take the time to reflect on your story, connect the dots between your background and your dreams, and let your genuine passion come through. That authenticity is something scholarship committees really value.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

I would have started preparing for the TOEFL earlier to reduce stress and have more time to focus on my scholarship preparation.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early, research deeply, and be authentic in telling your story. Show how your background connects to your future goals, and why your chosen program and scholarship are the right path for creating real impact. Seek mentorship from past scholarship holders; their insights are invaluable. And remember, this journey is not just about studying abroad; it’s about growing as a person, building global connections, and bringing back knowledge that can contribute to meaningful change.
