The Journey

My name is Jules MVONDO EDOU, and I am currently pursuing a PhD at the PPrime Institute in Poitiers, France. I am originally from Cameroon and hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fundamental Physics from the University of Yaoundé I, with a cumulative GPA of 14.75/20.
Driven by a passion for scientific research and the study of condensed matter, I decided to continue my academic journey in France, where I could benefit from world-class supervision and state-of-the-art research facilities.
Thanks to the IDEX scholarship, I joined Université Paris-Saclay, where I completed a Master’s in Physics and Applications (M1) and a Master’s in Quantum Light, Materials and Nanosciences – Condensed Matter and Its Interfaces (M2).

IDEX Scholarship Details

The IDEX Scholarship from Université Paris-Saclay is a prestigious, excellence-based award offered to outstanding international students admitted to a master’s program within one of its partner institutions.
The scholarship provides €10,000 for one academic year, paid over ten months, along with an additional allowance of up to €1,000 to help cover travel and visa expenses.
Selection is made entirely on academic merit by the master’s program committee, and applications are by invitation only, following admission to the program. The scholarship cannot be combined with other major awards or French government scholarships.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

I also received an offer for the Mobilex Scholarship from the University of Lille, but I ultimately chose to accept the IDEX award from Paris-Saclay, as it was more aligned with my academic and research goals.

Educational Background

My undergraduate studies in Fundamental Physics at the University of Yaoundé I provided me with a strong foundation in mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, and quantum physics, which helped me transition smoothly into graduate-level studies in France.
This rigorous academic training and genuine scientific curiosity greatly strengthened my application.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Université Paris-Saclay?

How Did You Find Information About IDEX Scholarships and Université Paris-Saclay?

For the Mobilex Scholarship, no formal application was required since it was offered through an existing university partnership.
However, the IDEX application required a more structured and thoughtful process. I first took time to research various master’s programs that matched my background and interests, carefully reading course descriptions, prerequisites, and learning outcomes.
After identifying the right programs, I created a strong and well-organized CV, which I had reviewed by senior academic peers. I then reached out to program coordinators to express my motivation, share my academic background, and highlight my interest in applying for the IDEX scholarship.
This direct and personalized communication is, in my opinion, a key step in demonstrating seriousness and genuine enthusiasm.
Once I received positive responses, I submitted my application via the eCandidat platform of Université Paris-Saclay, which is simple and user-friendly. I also provided two academic references from professors who knew my work well.

Information about the IDEX scholarship initially came from former students and mentors, and I later confirmed all details on the official website:
