The Journey
I’m Jowellyn Galito from the Philippines. My background is a mix of different business fields including accounting, operations, marketing, and more recently, digital marketing. I’m currently pursuing my Global MBA at Dongguk University in South Korea. These days, I’m especially focused on digital marketing and content creation. I’ve become more and more fascinated with how brands build meaningful connections online and reach wider audiences through strategic storytelling on social media.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Global Korea Scholarship, a government-funded program that covers full tuition, airfare, monthly allowance, and even a year of Korean language training. It’s administered by the National Institute for International Education and yes, it’s very competitive but totally worth it. I applied through the university track and got accepted at Dongguk University for the Global MBA program.
Educational Background
I actually hold two undergraduate degrees and one associate degree in Accounting, Management Accounting, and Accounting Technology. At first, I focused purely on general accounting, with a GPA of 82 out of 100. Honestly, I realized later on that accounting just wasn’t my calling and that reflected in my grades. But I also learned that a high GPA isn’t the only thing that matters in scholarships. I took online courses from schools like the University of London and Yale, exploring marketing, human resources, and business development. Those experiences helped me realize that pursuing an MBA was the right step to broaden my skills beyond accounting.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Korean Universities?
After finishing my degrees, I started seriously researching scholarships and universities. I kept a spreadsheet to stay on top of deadlines and document requirements. I binge-watched YouTube videos from current international students, which were super helpful, and joined Reddit threads and Facebook groups to get advice from people who had gone through the process.
Standardized Tests and Preparation:
I took the IELTS and scored 8. I mostly relied on free YouTube resources and practice exams. Since English is widely spoken in the Philippines and I use it daily, I only needed about three days of focused review. That said, I still made sure to brush up on specific test strategies.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Global Korea Scholarships?
I spent a lot of time refining my personal statement and study plan. I asked a few friends and mentors to read them and give honest feedback. I wanted my essays to be authentic and clear about my goals. Grades weren’t my strongest point but I made up for it by showing my determination, experiences, and passion for studying in Korea. I think that helped my application feel more personal and intentional.
How is Your Experience at Dongguk University?
So far, it’s been an amazing experience. Dongguk has a beautiful campus and the professors are supportive and approachable. Seoul is such a dynamic city and it’s been a dream living and studying here. The language can be a bit of a challenge but having a year of Korean language training really helped. I’ve also met scholars from all over the world, which has made the experience even more meaningful.
How Do You Rate Dongguk University Academically and Why?
Dongguk’s business school is AACSB-accredited, which speaks for itself. Academically, it’s very strong especially in terms of practical learning, international projects, and exposure to real-world business cases. The professors bring experience from various industries, so what we learn goes beyond textbooks and into actual application.
How Does theDongguk University Support International Students?
There are lots of helpful programs like Korean language classes, buddy systems, and cultural events. The international student office helps with visas, housing, and even mental health support. There are also clubs and student communities that help you feel less alone when you’re far from home.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or in Korean?
All of my MBA classes are in English. The Global MBA program is designed specifically for international students and is taught entirely in English to attract students from around the world.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Korean?
It’s definitely something to think about. While my classes are in English, daily life in Korea isn’t. Learning basic Korean before arriving really helps. And if you’re planning to take classes in Korean or work in Korea after graduation, speaking the language fluently becomes really important. Most companies still prefer foreigners who can communicate well in Korean.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe it was the story I told. My grades may not have been perfect but I had a consistent and honest narrative about how I shifted paths, upskilled myself, and committed to becoming a well-rounded business professional. I showed my work experience and extracurricular involvement to balance out my academic record. Everything I submitted was polished, focused, and most importantly, very true to who I am.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would definitely start earlier. Gathering documents and perfecting essays takes more time than you expect. I’d also connect with alumni sooner to get clearer insights and tips.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Be real and intentional. Understand what the scholarship is looking for, and read the guidelines carefully. But also make sure your unique voice and purpose come through. Don’t just list achievements. Show why you want it and how you’ll make the most of it. And don’t be afraid to ask others for help or feedback.
