The Journey

My name is Jennifer Callanga from the Philippines. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University (SNU) in Seoul, South Korea. My decision to further my studies in this field stems from my strong interest in smart materials and wearable systems, as well as my commitment to advancing engineering education and research in my home country.

Seoul National University President Fellowship (SPF) Details

I am a recipient of the Seoul National University President Fellowship (SPF), a prestigious university-based scholarship that supports promising scholars from major universities in developing nations, particularly from Asia, Africa, and South America, in their pursuit of a Ph.D. at SNU. Eligible applicants must be faculty members at universities in developing countries who do not yet hold a Ph.D. and are admitted to SNU as doctoral students. Priority is given to applicants conducting exceptional work in fields such as engineering, medicine, public health, agriculture, developmental studies, and Korean studies.

This fellowship offers one of the most comprehensive support packages for international scholars. Benefits include full tuition coverage for six semesters, a monthly stipend of KRW 1.5–2 million for three to four years, reimbursement under the National Health Insurance system, Korean language training, round-trip airfare, and childcare support for those with children enrolled in daycare.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

I am also a scholar under the University of the Philippines Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) Faculty Development – Foreign PhD Scholarship. This program supports Filipino faculty members from ERDT Consortium universities pursuing graduate studies in science and technology. The scholarship provides a total grant of approximately PHP 7 million, covering tuition, monthly stipend, round-trip airfare, health insurance, and a dissertation grant.

Educational Background

I earned my master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a GPA of 1.28/5.0 (where 1.0 is the highest). My academic foundation, combined with my teaching and research experience, prepared me well to pursue advanced research in mechanical engineering.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Seoul National University (SNU)?

How Did You Find Information About the Seoul National University President Fellowship (SPF) and Seoul National University (SNU)?

As South Korea’s leading university, SNU was my top choice for graduate studies. Upon admission, the SNU Office of International Affairs provided information about the SPF scholarship via email. In addition, the university website contains a comprehensive list of available scholarships.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

One of the requirements was proof of English proficiency. Since my previous university used English as the medium of instruction, I was able to submit a Certificate of English as Medium of Instruction instead of taking standardized tests such as TOEFL or IELTS.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Seoul National University President Fellowship (SPF)?

After being admitted to SNU, I carefully reviewed the eligibility criteria for the SPF scholarship and confirmed that I met the highly specific requirements. I then prepared all the necessary documents with particular emphasis on securing strong recommendation letters from the dean/president of my home university and from the prospective supervisor in my affiliated department at SNU. Establishing clear communication with my future supervisor was an essential part of the process, as it ensured alignment and support for my application.

How is (was) Your Experience at Seoul National University (SNU)?

My experience at SNU has been truly rewarding. As a leading global institution, it offers a dynamic academic environment, exposure to diverse laboratory cultures, and opportunities to learn more efficient and advanced research practices.

How Do You Rate Seoul National University (SNU) Academically and Why?

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate SNU a 10. This is due to its high-quality education, well-equipped laboratories, diverse student body, and wide range of courses offered in English.

How Does Seoul National University (SNU) Support International Students?

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is very active in supporting international students. They organize various programs and events each semester to promote student well-being and help scholars adjust to life in Korea.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?

While the majority of classes at SNU are conducted in Korean, many courses, especially in engineering, are offered in English. Most professors in engineering hold Ph.D. degrees from universities in the US or Europe, so English communication in class is not an issue.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?

This depends on the student’s major. Some colleges have fewer courses available in English, which could be challenging. However, learning Korean greatly enhances both academic and daily life, making the overall experience more meaningful.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

believe my long-standing experience as a university faculty member worked to my advantage. This background demonstrated both academic commitment and the potential to contribute significantly to my home institution after completing my Ph.D.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

The application had an optional requirement to submit an introduction video, which I did not prepare at the time. If I were to repeat the process, I would definitely make the effort to submit that video.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to future applicants is to prepare thoroughly and ensure that all documents are complete, especially letters of recommendation. It is also important to highlight not only academic achievements but also leadership, teaching, and research experiences that show your potential to contribute to your field and home country after your studies.
