The Journey
My name is Imadudin, and I come from Serang City, Indonesia, a place that is still developing and requires strong contributions from competent human resources. I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, where I first became interested in the study of herbal-based materials as potential alternative medicines. This experience inspired me to continue my academic journey by pursuing a Master’s degree in Pharmacy at Keimyung University. Through this program, I aim to deepen my understanding of pharmaceutical sciences, particularly in the areas of advanced technologies and modern drug discovery. My long-term focus is to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of medicines, not only in terms of affordability but also in their ability to provide better treatment outcomes. With this goal, I am especially motivated to contribute to the development of therapies that can support cancer patients and survivors, while also helping to strengthen the pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) funded by the Korean government. This prestigious scholarship fully supports my study in Korea by covering tuition fees, round-trip airfare, and settlement allowance upon arrival. In addition, it provides a monthly living stipend of KRW 1,000,000, along with medical insurance, language training support, and research allowances during the program.
Educational Background
I began my studies at IPB University in the Analytical Chemistry Diploma Program, where I developed strong practical skills and applied knowledge in chemistry, particularly for industrial applications. After earning my associate degree, I continued to a bachelor’s program to strengthen my theoretical foundation and chose to focus my thesis on pharmaceutical research, recognizing the need for more studies on medicinal plants in Indonesia. I completed my degree with a GPA of 3.52 in just 1 years while in the same time worked in the chemical industry, including as a Quality Control Supervisor, while joining professional trainings to refine my laboratory and analytical skills. These academic and professional experiences have prepared me to pursue a Master’s degree in Pharmacy at Keimyung University through the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), where the research focus aligns closely with my background and interests.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Keimyung University?
How Did You Find Information About the Global Korea Scholarship and Keimyung University?
I found information about scholarships through various sources, including official scholarship websites, scholarship hunter communities, and education fairs. I also followed the official social media accounts of scholarship preparation platforms and contacted awardees directly through LinkedIn to learn from their experiences and gain insights about both the universities and the scholarship programs I was interested in.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
As part of my preparation to apply for international programs, I understood the importance of having an official and credible English proficiency certificate that meets the requirements of both universities and scholarship providers. I decided to take the TOEIC test about six months before the scholarship application period, as an anticipation in case I needed to retake the test to achieve the required score. After being awarded the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), I also had to fulfill the Korean language requirement by obtaining a TOPIK certificate, with the specific level depending on my department. To meet this requirement, I joined an intensive Korean language program for less than one year while simultaneously taking official TOPIK tests during the course to achieve the required level.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Global Korea Scholarship?
In preparing to apply for scholarships, firstly I focused on finding universities in countries that matched my personal and academic needs. I considered factors such as financial aspects, cost of living, cultural and geographical suitability, and the language of instruction, while also making sure that the admission requirements were suitable for my background. Once I identified suitable universities, I explored scholarship opportunities that could support my goals and provide coverage for the programs I was most interested in. I also paid close attention to whether the fields of study supported by the scholarship were in line with my academic background and future aspirations, ensuring that my choice would be both realistic and meaningful for my career path.
How is (was) Your Experience at Keimyung University?
My experience at the Pharmacy Department of Keimyung University is very meaningful. As an international student from Indonesia, I find the academic environment supportive and the professors very dedicated to guiding students in both coursework and research. The laboratories are well-equipped, which helps me build my skills and explore my research interests. Although adapting to a new culture and language is a challenge, the university community is welcoming, and this motivates me to grow both academically and personally. Overall, studying here is broadening my perspective and preparing me to contribute more effectively to the pharmaceutical field in Indonesia.
How Do You Rate Keimyung University Academically and Why?
I would rate Keimyung University as strong academically, especially in providing supportive professors and access to good laboratory facilities that help students develop their research skills. The coursework is well designed, but as an international student, I sometimes find challenges in adapting to the language and academic culture. Even so, the university offers a balanced environment where I can grow both theoretically and practically, which makes the overall academic experience valuable.
How Does Keimyung University Support International Students?
As an international student, I feel well supported at Keimyung University. The university provides orientation programs and language classes that really help me adapt to both academic life and daily communication. Professors and staff are approachable and willing to guide me whenever I face challenges, whether in coursework or practical matters. I also appreciate the cultural activities and student communities, which make it easier for me to connect with others and feel more at home in Korea.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?
Most of my classes at Keimyung University are conducted in English, which makes it easier for international students to follow the lectures. However, not everything is fully in English; sometimes professors or materials include Korean, especially in discussions or examples related to local contexts. Even so, the dominant language of instruction in my program is English, and whenever Korean is used, professors are usually helpful in giving explanations or support to international students.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?
From my experience, it is possible to study in the Pharmacy Department without knowing Korean, since most classes are conducted in English. However, there are some academic situations where the native language is used, such as in certain references, lab instructions, or informal discussions with local students. Outside academics, daily life tasks like administration or living in Korea can also be more difficult without Korean. That’s why having at least a basic knowledge of the language is very helpful, even though it is not a strict requirement to succeed in the program.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe what made my application stand out was that my goals and research interests were well aligned with the program, university, and scholarship I applied for. My academic background in laboratory work, along with my professional experience, also demonstrated a strong and relevant foundation for the field, which showed that I had the capability to succeed. In addition, I strengthened my profile by obtaining several certifications related to laboratory analysis and professional skills, which reflected my commitment to continuous improvement. Finally, I made sure to prepare all the required documents carefully and submit them in the best possible quality.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would start preparing earlier, especially for language proficiency tests, so I could have more time and less pressure before the application period. I would also try to connect with more awardees or alumni in advance, since their insights are very helpful for understanding both the scholarship process and life in Korea. Lastly, I would spend more time improving my Korean language skills before arriving, because it would make adapting to daily life and academic tasks much smoother.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice for those applying for a similar scholarship is to start by clearly understanding your goals and making sure they align with the program and university you choose. Prepare your documents carefully and meet all requirements well in advance, because small details can make a big difference. It is also important to highlight your strengths, whether academic, professional, or personal, and show how they connect to the scholarship’s mission.
