The Journey

Hi! My name is Ilham Perdana. I’m an international student from Indonesia currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Atmospheric Science at Monash University, Australia. This field closely aligns with my professional background as a weather analyst at the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), where I have been working since 2021.

I have a strong interest in leveraging satellite meteorology to derive valuable insights for meteorological applications. I believe that remote sensing, particularly through satellites, holds so much potential for advancing our understanding of atmospheric phenomena as well as supporting weather analysts' decisions due to the high-impact weather. This belief has been a key motivation for me to return to academic study and deepen my expertise in this area.

Australia Awards Scholarship Details

My two-year study in Australia is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the Australia Awards Scholarships program. This prestigious scholarship enables me to pursue postgraduate studies full-time at one of Australia's top institutions. The Australia Awards is one of the longest-running scholarship programs offered by the Australian Government to its partner countries, including Indonesia.

The support provided is comprehensive, covering full tuition fees, living expenses, a settlement allowance, health insurance, and more. Additionally, recipients undergo a language preparation program prior to commencing their studies in Australia, which helps us better prepare for our academic journey.

Educational Background

I completed a four-year Bachelor's degree in Meteorology at the School of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (STMKG), which is affiliated with the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG). I graduated in 2020 with a GPA of 3.87 out of 4.00, earning recognition as the top graduate in Meteorology that year.

Since my undergraduate studies, I have developed a strong interest in satellite meteorology, which has made me realize there are lots of things to explore in this field. I believe that my academic background and hands-on experience—both during my studies and through my professional work—have significantly strengthened my qualifications for pursuing a Master’s degree.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Monash University?

Before applying for the Australia Awards Scholarships, I thoroughly researched universities in Australia that offer courses relevant to my field. I identified several institutions that aligned with my academic and professional goals, including Monash University and the University of Melbourne. One of the main aspects I focused on during this process was the language requirement.

Since this is my first experience studying abroad, the application process initially felt overwhelming. However, the Australia Awards Scholarships offered invaluable assistance in preparing all the required documents and meeting standardized test requirements, such as the IELTS. Fortunately, I had already begun preparing for the IELTS before applying for the scholarship. I dedicated about a year to preparation through language courses and self-study, balancing it alongside my work at BMKG.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship?

I began preparing for the scholarship a year before I officially applied. I started by researching various programs to find one that aligned with my interests and values. I carefully reviewed the guidelines, available support, and eligibility requirements of each program.

Several months before the application opened, I began preparing the necessary documents. I believe that rushing through important processes is never ideal, so I made sure to give myself enough time. In addition, I participated in several mentorship programs in Indonesia, such as Indonesia Mengglobal, Schoters, and Votes Indonesia. These programs provided me with valuable insights and connected me with past scholarship recipients, which greatly enriched my preparation.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out due to the strong alignment between my academic background, professional experience, and active involvement in remote sensing. Through various research projects, I have contributed to initiatives supporting regional early warning systems for weather-related hazards.

I also highlighted how pursuing graduate studies in Atmospheric Science will deepen my expertise and allow me to make a greater impact. I am especially committed to advancing the use of remote sensing technologies to improve weather forecasting and strengthen disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I think one area I would focus on improving is managing my nerves during the interview process, as well as practicing my English speaking skills more consistently. I felt quite nervous during the interview, as well as my intermediate speaking skills, which made it challenging for me to express my ideas clearly and in a well-structured manner.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Strengthen your reasoning for pursuing further studies by emphasizing your growing experience and active involvement in your field. Highlight the tangible impacts you’ve made—whether through projects, research, or community initiatives—and explain how these experiences have shaped your understanding of the field’s needs. Then, make a clear connection between continuing your education and the broader impact it will have, both for your personal development and for the community or sector you aim to serve.
