My name is Hemish Ahuja, and I am originally from India. I am currently pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Science in Physics with a Minor in Computer Science at York University in Toronto, Canada. My academic focus lies at the heart of fundamental physics - from modelling quantum gravity corrections on black hole shadows to testing the symmetries that underpin beyond-Standard-Model physics. I chose this path not out of obligation, but out of an enduring compulsion to understand the foundational architecture of the universe. Physics, to me, is not simply a discipline; it is the language in which nature's deepest truths are written, and I want to be part of the generation that reads - and extends - the next chapter.

I am profoundly honored to have received the International Presidential Scholarship of Excellence at York University - a $180,000 CAD merit-based award that covers full tuition and living expenses across the entirety of my undergraduate degree. This scholarship fundamentally transformed my trajectory, allowing me to dedicate myself wholly to research and academic leadership without the weight of financial constraint.

This research grant funded my first formal undergraduate research project, in which I investigated quantum error mitigation strategies on IBM quantum processors, an experience that cemented my commitment to experimental and computational physics research.

This prestigious international fellowship supported an all-expenses-paid research internship in Frankfurt, where I developed Python-based simulation frameworks for quantum gravity corrections on black hole shadows and presented peer-reviewed findings at an international conference engaging researchers from over five countries.
Educational Background
My preparation for rigorous academic research began well before formal university matriculation. As a high school student in India, I secured a research internship in which I co-authored a literature review analyzing the time-dependent behaviour of the Hubble parameter across competing theoretical cosmological frameworks - including ΛCDM, modified gravity, and dark energy models - employing Mathematica-based analytical techniques to investigate correlations with other cosmological constants. That experience, unusual for a student of that age, instilled in me a critical and analytical framework that has carried directly into my current work in quantum and atomic physics. I graduated high school with a 96% cumulative average (A+), reflecting a consistent standard of academic excellence across all subjects.
How Did You Find Information About International Presidential Scholarship of Excellence and York University?
Ironically, it was the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic that redirected - and ultimately elevated - my academic trajectory. Delays to India's JEE Advanced entrance examinations gave me an unexpected window of time, and rather than wait passively, I used that period to look beyond national borders. I began researching international physics programs with strong research cultures and generous funding for international students. That search led me to York University, a combination of world-class atomic physics research, a supportive international community, and the International Presidential Scholarship of Excellence. What began as an unforeseen casual detour became a consequential decision.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I prepared for and completed the following standardized examinations:
SAT: 1530 (Math: 800/800; Evidence-Based Reading & Writing: 730/800)
Advanced Placement Exams:
AP Physics C Electricity & Magnetism: 5/5
AP Physics C Classical Mechanics: 5/5
AP Calculus BC: 5/5
IELTS: 7.5/9
A perfect score on the SAT Mathematics section and 5s across all three Advanced Placement examinations in physics and calculus provided a strong quantitative foundation. I prepared largely through self-study, working through university-level problem sets and past examinations to ensure I was operating well above the threshold of the test.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the International Presidential Scholarship of Excellence?
I prioritized demonstrating independent intellectual curiosity over standard curriculum mastery. Rather than relying solely on grades, I sought out environments that would allow me to grapple with complex, open questions in physics early on - moving beyond standard coursework to engage directly with academic literature and advanced simulation frameworks while still in high school.
Simultaneously, I invested deeply in leadership and community-building - not as résumé embellishments, but as genuine extensions of my values. I helped establish some of India's largest student-led physics events, took on organizational leadership roles, and volunteered for causes I genuinely cared about. These experiences shaped me as much as any equation on a chalkboard. When it came time to write my application, I crafted a narrative that bridged intense technical rigor with broad, systemic impact. I positioned myself not merely as a consumer of knowledge, but as an active contributor to the scientific community. I believe the committee saw not just a promising student, but someone who would enrich the university from the moment they arrived.
How is Your Experience at York University?
My experience at York University has been intellectually demanding and profoundly rewarding. Currently, I serve as a Research Assistant in the EDM³ Atomic Physics Lab under Dr. Eric Hessels, where I am co-designing and implementing ultra-high vacuum cryogenic systems. Our objective is to measure the electron's electric dipole moment (eEDM) with unprecedented precision using matrix-isolated BaF molecules - an endeavor that directly probes the fundamental limits of the Standard Model and could reveal signatures of new physics beyond what current theory predicts.
Beyond the lab, I have had the privilege of serving as Undergraduate Chair of the Student Advisory Council for the Canadian Association of Physicists, representing over 10,000 physics students nationally and spearheading initiatives in education, equity, and international collaboration - including establishing Canada's first formal partnership with the International Association of Physics Students.
I also led the Physics Society at York University as President, transforming it into a vibrant hub for academic engagement and community-building. These experiences - from cryogenics to national science policy - have convinced me that York offers a uniquely fertile environment for students who arrive ready to contribute.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe the defining factor was my early, unorthodox devotion to scientific inquiry and the tangible execution of complex research long before formal university training. By the time I applied, I had already co-authored a literature review on the time-dependent behaviour of the Hubble parameter- work that most students do not encounter until graduate school. That demonstrated to the selection committee that I was not merely waiting to be taught physics; I was already actively participating in the mathematical unravelling of the universe's fundamental architecture.
Furthermore, while the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many conventional pathways, I leveraged the additional time to assume national and international physics advocacy and leadership roles - experiences that showcased initiative, resilience, and a commitment to community that transcended any single classroom or laboratory. If I were to do anything differently, I would have begun reaching out to prospective research supervisors even earlier in the process. Building those relationships sooner would have further strengthened my application and accelerated my integration into the research community upon arrival.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Refuse to be confined by the standard academic track. Engage in research, and by that, I do not mean merely producing papers, but cultivating the habit of questioning everything: every assumption, every convention, every accepted explanation. The most transformative scholarship applications are not built on perfect transcripts alone; they are built on the evidence of a mind that cannot stop interrogating the world. Lead within your field, but lead authentically. Committees can distinguish between involvement born of genuine passion and involvement manufactured for an application. True distinction comes not from optimizing your profile, but from advancing your discipline while simultaneously elevating the scientific community and the people around you. Your application should read not as a list of achievements, but as a story - one with intellectual through-lines, honest motivations, and a clear vision for what you intend to contribute.
