The Journey
Hi! I’m Harini from India. I did my Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology at SRM Institute of Science and Technology with a CGPA of 9.3/10. Right now, I’m studying an MS in Bioeconomy at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany.
During my bachelor's, I received the DAAD-WISE scholarship and did a 2-month research internship at the University of Tübingen, Germany, completely funded by the German government. It was one of the most exciting and eye-opening experiences of my academic journey.
How I Found Out About DAAD-WISE
During my bachelor’s, I told my roommate that I was looking for research opportunities in Germany. She then shared the DAAD scholarship opportunities with me, as a professor had told her about it earlier. I explored the DAAD website, filtered the scholarships that fit my profile, and found WISE. It matched perfectly with what I was looking for.
DAAD-WISE Scholarship Details
DAAD-WISE is for Indian undergraduate students in science and engineering who want to do a research internship in Germany. I received around €936 per month for living expenses, a travel allowance of about €1,050, and full health, accident, and liability insurance.
My Academic Background
At SRM, I worked on projects in molecular biology and microbiology. That helped me build a strong foundation and understand my interest in research. I always wanted to get international exposure, and this scholarship gave me exactly that.
Finding a Research Host
I looked for professors in Germany whose work matched my interests. I read their papers and sent personalized emails explaining why I wanted to intern with them. Some didn’t reply, a few said no, and finally, one professor from the University of Tübingen said yes. That’s when my application process really started.
Tip: Email professors early. Germany requires a lot of documentation, and the visa process takes time. I was lucky that my host professor helped on short notice, but in general, German professors value early planning and punctuality.
Application Process
Once I had my invitation letter, I applied through the DAAD portal with my motivation letter (rewrote it many times), CV in Europass format, academic transcripts and mark sheets, a recommendation letter from my Indian professor, the invitation letter from my German host, and a passport copy with supporting documents.
The motivation letter was the most important part as it had to reflect my goals and genuine interest.
What Helped Me
Talking to past DAAD-WISE recipients gave me clarity and confidence. My motivation letter was honest, focused, and aligned with the internship. My professor’s invitation clearly explained the research I’d be working on, and my academic background and project experience also supported my application.
Highlights
One of the best moments was attending the DAAD Award Ceremony in India. I met other WISE scholars and we became good friends. After the internship, we even went on a trip to Amsterdam together. It made the whole journey even more memorable, not just professionally but personally too.
What I Would Do Differently
I would start much earlier, especially when contacting professors, as many had already finalized their interns. I recommend starting background research a year in advance. Also, don’t delay your visa process. It takes time, and everything in Germany requires proper documentation, so it is better to be ready early.
Final Tips
Start early, especially when emailing professors and preparing documents. Write a genuine motivation letter without overcomplicating it. Talk to past recipients, as their advice can be very helpful. You don’t always need to be a topper and from a top institute; if you’re thinking about applying, just go for it. You never know how far it can take you, like how it did for me!
