The Journey
My name is Hajra Sultana, and I am from Hyderabad, Telangana, India. I pursued a Bachelor's in Sciences with a focus on Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Sciences from Osmania University, graduating with a GPA of 3.72 on a 4.0 scale. I have always been interested in Computer Engineering, and despite starting from scratch in this field, my educational background provided me with the fundamental knowledge needed to take this path. I graduated in 2021 and was recruited by Tata Consultancy Services, where I worked as a technical support executive for two years.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I began researching scholarship opportunities and discovered the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS). Although I initially missed the application timeline in 2022, I successfully applied in 2023, and I am now proud to be a GKS scholar.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I received the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), which is offered by the South Korean government. This prestigious scholarship covers various aspects, including airfare, medical insurance, a stipend, and research support. Additionally, the scholarship provides full coverage of educational expenses, including a one-year mandatory Korean language course prior to the commencement of my master’s program. I am currently pursuing a master’s in Computer Engineering, specializing in Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, at Inje University, Gimhae campus.
Educational Background
I completed my bachelor's degree in Sciences from Osmania University in 2021, where I studied Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Sciences. My GPA was 3.72 on a 4.0 scale, which provided me with a strong academic foundation. My interest in Computer Engineering began during my undergraduate studies, and my background in these subjects helped me understand core concepts, especially in computing. While working at Tata Consultancy Services, I gained practical experience in technical support, which further solidified my decision to pursue a career in AI and Computer Engineering.
Beyond academics, I have always been actively involved in extracurricular activities, including sports, art, and music, throughout my elementary, high school, and university years. These activities, along with my wide range of hobbies, allowed me to develop a well-rounded profile that complemented my academic achievements.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Global Korea Scholarship and Inje University?
When I decided to apply for the GKS scholarship, I sought information from various sources, including online platforms like YouTube, Coursera, and LinkedIn. One of the most helpful resources was connecting with a former student from my university through LinkedIn, who provided valuable insights into the scholarship process.
In terms of standardized exams, I took the IELTS and scored a 7. I prepared for it using YouTube tutorials as I balanced my work responsibilities at the time. Additionally, I completed several certification courses on platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn, and Udemy, which not only enhanced my technical skills but also played a significant role in strengthening my application. The process of applying for GKS involved choosing between two tracks—the embassy track and the university track. I applied through the university track, where I submitted my documents directly to the university. The selection process consisted of a document screening and an interview.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the application process again, I would start preparing at least 3-4 months in advance. During my application, I found myself working under time pressure, and more time would have allowed me to organize my documents and refine my statements further. A more strategic approach with additional time for preparation would have allowed me to submit an even stronger application.
What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
For those aspiring to apply for the GKS scholarship or any similar opportunities, my advice is to be confident in your strengths while also embracing your weaknesses—these unique qualities are what set you apart. Your application should include precise, detailed information supported by proof, such as certificates of achievement.
The Statement of Purpose (SOP) and study plan are critical components, so invest time in making them reflective of your personal journey, academic background, and future goals. Highlight everything from your academic achievements to extracurricular activities, personal setbacks, and how you overcame them, as these contribute to a strong personality profile. It’s also beneficial to connect with former GKS scholars on platforms like LinkedIn or YouTube to gain firsthand insights.
Finally, if your first application is unsuccessful, don’t be discouraged. Use the time to strengthen your profile with additional certifications, skills, and experiences, and apply again with a renewed sense of confidence. Every setback is an opportunity for a stronger comeback.
