The Journey
Hi! My name is Flavia Astete Garcia, and I was born in Lima, Peru. I have always been interested in what exists beyond my immediate surroundings, which is why I began preparing for applications and dreaming of studying abroad at the age of 15. Whether through excelling academically, taking on leadership roles, practicing English, or reflecting on where I wanted my journey to take me, each step was intentional. Through hard work and determination, I moved to Philadelphia at 17 to study at Temple University, where I pursued a degree in Advertising with a minor in International Business. I was drawn to this major due to my interest in combining creativity with strategic thinking, project planning, and problem-solving.

Educational Background
I attended regular “secondary school” and always worked hard to get strong grades, graduating at the top of my class and earning academic medals and honors. In South America, we do not use a GPA system, but my academic average was 19 out of 20. Spanish is my first language, but I have been learning English since I was 7 through a private English academy and by preparing for English standardized tests. I also spent a lot of time reading about and researching the application process, which helped me feel prepared and confident when applying.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Temple University?
I attended a boot camp focused on helping top students prepare to apply to schools in the U.S. I also researched a lot!
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I attended Toefl prep course for some months and reviewed free materials online
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship?
I prepared by understanding my own story. Many scholarships ask for a personal statement or essay that explains why you are a good fit for the scholarship. Taking the time to understand what I can offer, who I am, and how I would use the financial aid helped me answer these questions clearly. This preparation showed my commitment and helped me communicate my goals more confidently.
How is (was) Your Experience at Temple University?
Temple supported me greatly throughout my undergraduate journey. The Office of International Students opened doors for me, especially when it came to finding my first internships. Through Temple, I built a strong community with other international students, which gave me access to more opportunities. Temple’s academic environment also allowed me to explore my interests, and I truly enjoyed my experience.
How Does Temple University Support International Students?
Temple cares deeply about international students and offers programs and activities that help us connect and feel supported. Through leadership opportunities, I was able to impact other international students and build a strong community. Temple also provides financial aid and on-campus job opportunities for international students.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because it combined strong academics with my personal story. For the scholarship, I submitted a video essay where I shared my journey and experiences with leadership and explained what leadership means to me. Choosing a creative format allowed me to express myself in an authentic way. I am not sure if other applicants submitted a video, but I believe this creative approach helped set my application apart.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Looking back, I would have taken standardized (SAT or ACT) tests to strengthen my chances of admission and applied to more schools. I might have also explored a different major, as I am now more interested in tech, and I worked on being more confident. I remember interviewing for a school I really wanted to attend, and I felt I was not at my best because I was nervous. This showed me how important it is to practice speaking English and feel comfortable expressing yourself. Now that I have completed my degree and reached a different point in my life, I have realized the importance of having grace with myself. If you are an international student who is worrying or being too hard on yourself, trust that the right opportunity will never miss you. There is a perfect scholarship or program out there for you. Never doubt yourself; you have your own story. Show them why they need you at their school.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Consistency will get you there. If you really want a scholarship or to be accepted, start early, build systems, and commit fully to your goal. I started when I was 15 and planned my path step by step. Be proud of yourself, because even choosing to explore studying abroad is a brave decision. Study, research, and do not give up, even when you do not yet see how you will afford your education. There is an opportunity out there for you. Do not be afraid to reach out to people on LinkedIn, current students, or students who have won the scholarships you are interested in. Connections matter; do not be afraid to ask questions, reach out to admissions, and build relationships. Most importantly, be yourself. Many of my opportunities came not only from my skills, but from my story and who I am as a person. Your story shapes your strengths and your ability to succeed.
