My name is Fidelity Ndali, and I'm from Zimbabwe. I'm currently pursuing an MSc in Modelling for Global Health at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Medicine, where I'm a member of Kellogg College. My decision to pursue further education in this field stems from my undergraduate studies in Applied Mathematics with Economics at the University of Zimbabwe, where I became fascinated by how mathematical modelling and quantitative analysis can inform public health policy, particularly for infectious diseases affecting low and middle-income countries. I received the Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship at the University of Oxford for the 20242025 academic year. This is a full scholarship that covers tuition fees, living costs (at least £20,780), and includes additional support such as leadership and impact programming, entrepreneurship support, and networking opportunities. The scholarship also provides mentorship through the AfOx Mentorship Programme and supports scholars before, during, and after their time at Oxford.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes, I was also offered the Beit Trust Scholarship with full funding for the University of Cambridge in 2024. However, I ultimately chose to accept the Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship at Oxford due to the specific strengths of the Modelling for Global Health programme and the comprehensive support system offered by the AfOx initiative.

Educational Background

I graduated with First Class Honours in Applied Mathematics with Economics from the University of Zimbabwe (2019-2023), ranking in the top 5% of first-class honours graduates. My coursework included Statistics and Probability, Population Dynamics, Mathematical Modelling, Operations Research, Survival Analysis, Econometrics, and Introduction to Programming in C++. This interdisciplinary foundation was crucial in preparing me for graduate studies in global health modelling. For my personal statement, I focused on being clear about my goals and career aspirations, ensuring it was reflective, genuine, and unique. I highlighted my specific interest in how mathematical and economic models could evaluate intervention strategies, forecast disease burden, and guide resource allocation for health systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. I also made sure to articulate why Oxford specifically was the right fit for my goals, the opportunity to learn from leading experts, and to collaborate with students from diverse backgrounds. I had several trusted mentors and professors review my application materials and provide feedback, which was invaluable in strengthening my submission.

How is Your Experience at the University of Oxford?

My experience at Oxford has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. The MSc in Modelling for Global Health is intensive, with modules covering Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases, Health Economic Modelling, Malaria Modelling for Strategy Design, Model Fitting and Uncertainty, and Individual-based Models with C++, among others. The calibre of teaching is exceptional, and I've had the privilege of learning from world-leading experts in infectious disease modelling. Beyond academics, the AfOx community has been incredibly supportive, providing leadership development opportunities and a strong network of African scholars committed to creating positive change on the continent. The SDG Impact Lab Fellowship has further enriched my experience, allowing me to develop skills beyond the technical aspects of my degree.

How Do You Rate the University of Oxford Academically and Why?

I would rate Oxford exceptionally highly; it's truly world-class. The academic rigour is unmatched, and the program's applied focus means we're constantly engaging with real-world health challenges rather than just theoretical concepts. The faculty are not only accomplished researchers but also excellent teachers who are genuinely invested in student success. What sets Oxford apart is the access to cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities, and the chance to work on live projects with organisations like the WHO and various NGOs. The resources available, from computational facilities to research databases, enable us to pursue ambitious projects that would be difficult elsewhere. My placement at the National University of Singapore, where I worked on assessing the impact of M72/AS01E TB vaccination in Cambodia, exemplifies the program's commitment to providing hands-on research experience.

How Does the University of Oxford Support International Students?

Oxford provides comprehensive support for international students, particularly through the AfOx initiative. Beyond financial support, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program offers pre-arrival orientation, ongoing mentorship, leadership training, and career development support. Kellogg College has a very international community, which helps with integration and cultural adjustment. The college provides academic advising, pastoral care, and social events that help build community. There are also numerous student societies, including the Oxford Global Health Society (where I serve as Assistant Secretary) and the Oxford University Africa Society, which create spaces for international students to connect and support one another. The university's Career Service also offers specialised support for international students navigating their career paths.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe several factors made my application competitive. First, my First Class Honours degree and ranking in the top 5% demonstrated strong academic credentials. Second, my clear research vision, specifically wanting to use mathematical and economic modelling to address infectious disease challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa, showed that I had carefully thought about how this degree would advance my goals. Third, my undergraduate thesis and work experience at BancABC demonstrated my ability to apply quantitative methods to solve practical problems. Finally, my personal statement authentically conveyed my motivation rooted in witnessing health challenges in Zimbabwe and my genuine commitment to making a difference in my community and continent. I think the combination of strong academics, clear purpose, relevant experience, and authentic passion created a compelling narrative.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to do it again, I would have started networking with current students and alumni even earlier in the process. Their insights were invaluable, and earlier connections could have helped me refine my application strategy sooner. I would also have applied for more scholarships simultaneously to increase my options, even though the process is time-consuming.

Additionally, I wish I had kept better documentation of my undergraduate research projects and extracurricular activities throughout my degree; compiling everything during the application period was more difficult than it needed to be. Finally, I would have been less anxious about the outcome and more confident in my qualifications; imposter syndrome is real, but trusting in your preparation and worth is important.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early and give yourself adequate time to craft a thoughtful application. Research the program thoroughly and be specific about why that particular program at that particular institution aligns with your goals.

Be authentic in your personal statement; admission committees can tell when you're being genuine versus writing what you think they want to hear.
