The Journey
My name is Feyisayo (Feyi) Olufemi, and I am originally from Nigeria. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, in 2018. During my undergraduate studies, I conducted my thesis in a drug design laboratory, where we explored the potential of plant phytochemicals in developing treatments for diabetes. Although the work was intellectually stimulating, I realized that lab-based research was not the right fit for me. I did not exactly enjoy it.
After graduation, I worked as a pharmacy technician and had the opportunity to interact with many individuals over the age of 45 living with chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. That experience made it clear to me that I am passionate about supporting people living with chronic diseases, but I wanted to approach it from outside the lab. I also saw firsthand how difficult it was for some patients to choose between purchasing food and affording their medications.
These experiences inspired me to take a more preventive, upstream approach to health. That was what led me to pursue further education in Nutrition, one of the most powerful and modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases.
Graduate Teaching Assistantship Details
I received a scholarship in the form of a graduate teaching assistantship at Oregon State University. This assistantship provides full tuition remission for each academic term, covers 90% of the mandatory university fees, and includes a graduate assistant health insurance plan. In addition to these benefits, the position offers a monthly stipend of $2,250. The award is renewable for up to three years, contingent on satisfactory academic progress and performance in the assigned teaching responsibilities.
Educational Background
As I mentioned earlier, I hold a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, which provided a strong foundation for my transition into the field of Nutrition. The two disciplines are closely related, particularly in areas such as metabolism, nutrient biochemistry, and chronic disease pathways. In fact, my current advisor also transitioned from Biochemistry to Nutrition, which further affirms the compatibility of both fields. I graduated with a cumulative GPA of 4.05 out of 5.0, reflecting my academic strength and dedication, and positioning me well for advanced studies in Nutrition.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Oregon State University?
How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Oregon State University?
I discovered most of the schools I applied to, including Oregon State University, through online research. I began by using Google to search for U.S. universities that offer graduate programs in Nutrition, particularly those with strong research in community nutrition and chronic disease prevention. From there, I explored each institution’s website to learn more about faculty research interests, program structure, and available funding or scholarship opportunities.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?
I did not take any of these standardized tests, primarily due to financial constraints. As a result, I strategically focused my applications on institutions that offered GRE or GMAT waivers for prospective students in Nutrition graduate programs. For English proficiency exams like TOEFL or IELTS, many U.S. schools recognize Nigeria as an English-speaking country and therefore waive that requirement. For schools that still required these exams, I chose not to apply.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Graduate Teaching Assistantship?
When I decided to pursue further education, I knew I wanted to study in the United States, but I also recognized that I would need financial support to make it possible. I began by applying to a few doctoral programs, targeting those that offered scholarships or funding opportunities. For Oregon State University, I submitted my application with a CV, academic transcript, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation from former professors and professionals I had worked with. I also reached out to a professor whose research in Nutrition and Epidemiology, particularly in chronic disease prevention and food insecurity, greatly aligned with my interests. After our conversation and a subsequent interview, she expressed her willingness to support me as part of her research team. A few weeks later, I received my admission offer from the Nutrition graduate program, along with a scholarship and funding package that made it possible for me to begin my studies.
How Is (was) Your Experience at Oregon State University?
My experience at Oregon State University has been very positive. The professors are welcoming, approachable, and genuinely invested in the success of their students. In particular, my advisor has been incredibly supportive and understanding, which has been a major source of motivation for me throughout my program.
How Do You Rate Oregon State University Academically and Why?
I would rate Oregon State University highly in terms of academics. It is a research-intensive institution with a strong emphasis on academic rigor and innovation. The faculty members are knowledgeable and accessible, and they foster an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in meaningful academic discussions.
How Does Oregon State University Support International Students?
While Oregon State University is a predominantly white institution, there is a strong and supportive community of Nigerian and other international students that helps foster a sense of belonging. Additionally, the university offers several resources and offices dedicated to supporting international students, including academic advising, the Office of International Students, and a number of cultural centers.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
It was quite unexpected for me to gain admission into a PhD program without first obtaining a master’s degree, but I believe several factors made my application stand out. First, I proactively connected with a professor whose research interests closely aligned with mine, and that relationship played a significant role in my acceptance. Additionally, my CV highlighted meaningful public health work I had done in Nigeria, such as founding a non-governmental organization focused on improving nutritional awareness. Strong letters of recommendation from professors and professionals I’ve worked with also helped strengthen my application.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would believe in myself more and begin the application earlier than I did. I would also be more strategic with my references, ensuring that recommendation letters come from academic or professional supervisors rather than teaching assistants. I learned this the hard way after being rejected by a school because one of my references didn’t meet their criteria.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Believe in yourself. You’ve got what it takes; you just don’t know it yet. Don’t underestimate the value of any experience that relates to your goals, no matter how small it may seem. I included even the small ways I supported my mom with data analysis for her work in my CV. Everything counts. Most importantly, stay persistent. You may face rejections, but you only need one ‘yes’ to get started—and that ‘yes’ will come.
