The Journey
My name is Federica. I’m originally from Italy, and I got my BSc in Economics and Finance from Bocconi University in Milan. I recently completed a Master’s in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences with a concentration in Economics at Columbia University, where I was supported by the Fulbright Program.
I chose this program because I was already considering pursuing a PhD and wanted a rigorous environment that would allow me to strengthen my quantitative training while also gaining research experience. The program places a strong emphasis on applied research through term projects and research assistantships, which helped me develop practical research skills and confirm my interest in an academic career.
Fulbright Graduate Study Scholarship Details
I received a Graduate Study Self-Placed scholarship from the Fulbright Program to pursue my Master’s at Columbia University. The award was approximately $50,000 and supported my studies by contributing toward tuition and living expenses during the program.
Educational Background
I completed a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance at Bocconi University in Milan, graduating with a final grade of 106/110. During my undergraduate studies I developed a strong foundation in economics, mathematics, and statistics, and I also spent a semester abroad at University of Wisconsin-Madison.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Columbia University?
To prepare my applications, I first took the GMAT and GRE. I then spoke with professors to get advice on programs and research fit, and they later supported my applications with reference letters. I spent significant time working on my personal statement, writing multiple drafts and asking a professor to review it and give feedback. I also prepared applications together with a few friends who were applying in the same cycle, so we regularly reviewed each other’s essays and helped improve them before submission.
How Did You Find Information About the Fulbright Scholarships and Columbia University?
I found information about scholarships and programs through a combination of sources. For example, I first learned about the Fulbright scholarship through TikTok, which made me look into the program more seriously. For universities and graduate programs, I mainly relied on speaking with professors and alumni from my bachelor’s university, who shared their experiences and advice. Their guidance was very helpful in understanding different programs and identifying opportunities that fit my academic goals.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
Yes, I took the GMAT and GRE as part of my applications. To prepare, I followed a structured study plan using official practice materials and focused particularly on the quantitative and analytical sections. I practiced regularly with mock exams to become comfortable with the format and timing.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Fulbright Graduate Study Scholarship?
To be honest, I discovered most of the scholarships I applied to quite late, so the preparation process was somewhat rushed. Once I found them, I focused on quickly gathering the required materials, including recommendation letters and application essays. I worked on drafting my statements in a short timeframe and asked a professor to review them to make sure they were clear and strong before submitting the applications.
How Is (was) Your Experience at Columbia University?
My experience at Columbia University was very positive. The program director was always very supportive, and the professors were as well, you could really tell they wanted students to succeed. They were open to meeting, discussing future plans, and giving advice, which made the experience both academically strong and very supportive.
How Do You Rate Columbia University Academically and Why?
I would rate Columbia University academically very highly.
What Did You Pursue After Fulbright Graduate Study Scholarship?
I am currently working as a Research Assistant at Columbia University. In the fall, I will begin a PhD.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think a combination of my international background and my extracurricular involvement helped my application stand out. I moved quite a bit growing up, which made me comfortable adapting to new environments and also gave me a lot to talk about in many essays. In addition, I had extensive extracurricular experience, earlier through sports (middle and high school), and later through university activities such as student organizations, volunteering, and student council, which showed my engagement beyond academics.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would start looking into programs, application requirements, and available scholarships much earlier, probably from the beginning of the second year of bachelor. This would allow more time to prepare materials and plan the process more carefully. I would also try to build even stronger relationships with professors earlier on, since their guidance and support are very valuable during the application process.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
I would say to be truthful to yourself about what you really want and why you are applying. Of course plans can change, but being sincere in your application is very important, the committee can usually sense genuine motivation and passion. I would also recommend reaching out to people who received the scholarship before you. They are often very willing to help and share advice, and they understand the process and your position better than anyone else.
