My name is Fayowole David Ayadi, and I am from Nigeria. My journey into mathematics didn’t start in a classroom; it began at my mother’s business. I was 12 when I realized: numbers held the power to save or destroy.
Now, as a PhD student in Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, I dissect complex systems. Pursuing further education was a natural step for me as I wanted to conduct impactful research, especially in applied mathematics areas such as mathematical biology and optimal control.

Educational Background
I earned my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Ibadan with a strong academic record, and I graduated with a First Class. Also, I have an Associate degree in Math from Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (now, Lagos State University of Education), where I graduated with a Distinction in Math. My solid foundation in applied math courses helped prepare me for graduate-level work. I also had some teaching experience and research exposure, which strengthened my graduate school applications.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville?
I started by identifying programs that aligned with my research interests, particularly in applied mathematics. I reached out to current students and faculty, reviewed program curricula, and tailored each application to the program’s strengths. I also prepared strong statements of purpose and secured solid recommendation letters from professors familiar with my work.
Most of my information came from university websites, graduate school directories, online forums like GradCafe and LinkedIn, as well as attending webinars and info sessions organized by universities.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Graduate Teaching Assistantship?
For the assistantship, I prepared a compelling statement of purpose that highlighted my teaching experience and research interests. I also ensured my CV was research-focused. Since assistantships are competitive, I made sure every part of my application demonstrated my potential to teach and conduct quality research.
How Is (was) Your Experience at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville?
My experience at the institution has been both enriching and challenging in the best ways. Academically, the program is rigorous, with courses that have deepened my understanding of applied mathematics and expanded my skill set, especially in areas like mathematical modeling and differential equations. I’ve also had opportunities to teach and interact with undergraduate students, which has improved my communication and pedagogical skills.
The faculty is supportive and approachable. Beyond academics, the environment is diverse and welcoming, with various student communities that help you settle in. Overall, it’s been a transformative experience, both intellectually and personally.
How Do You Rate the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Academically and Why?
Academically, I would rate the institution very highly. The coursework is intellectually demanding and well-structured, covering both foundational and advanced topics in applied mathematics. The faculty are not only accomplished researchers but also excellent teachers who are genuinely invested in students’ growth. The access to academic resources, including seminars and mentorship, has significantly enhanced my development as a researcher and future educator.
How Does the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Support International Students?
The institution provides solid support for international students through its International Student Services Office, which assists with visa processes, orientation, and cultural integration. There are regular workshops on immigration updates, career development, and academic success specifically geared toward international students. Additionally, the university organizes social events and cultural programs to help international students feel more connected. Personally, I’ve found the staff to be responsive and helpful, especially when navigating issues related to documentation, health insurance, and taxes. Overall, the support system has made the transition to studying abroad much smoother.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my strong academic background, clear research interests, teaching experience, and a well-written personal statement helped my application stand out. Also, my enthusiasm for mathematical research and prior involvement in projects or assistant roles probably strengthened my case.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
would have started preparing earlier and probably applied to more programs to increase my chances. I would also have engaged more in research projects and published more before applying.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Start early and be organized. Make sure your documents are strong, especially your statement of purpose and recommendation letters. Tailor your application to each program and don’t hesitate to reach out to current students or faculty. Also, apply widely, and don’t be discouraged by rejections. One good opportunity can change everything.
