How a Pakistani Scholar Secured the Fully Funded Commonwealth Scholarship for a Master's in GIS at the University of Leicester
University: University of Leicester, UK
Degree: MSc in Geographic Information Science (GIS)
Previous Education: Bachelor’s and Master’s in Environmental Sciences
Test Scores: IELTS (7.0)
Scholarship: Commonwealth Shared Scholarship (Fully Funded)

The Journey
My name is Fareha Siddiqui, and I am from Pakistan. I hold a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences. During my first Master's, my thesis focused on GIS, which sparked my interest in the field. This experience motivated me to pursue a second Master's in GIS to develop more advanced skills and deepen my understanding of geospatial analysis. My goal is to apply these skills in a developing country like Pakistan, which urgently needs more eco-friendly approaches to combat climate change.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship by the Commonwealth Commission and the University of Leicester, which covered my full tuition fee, round-trip airfare, a monthly stipend for accommodation and living expenses, and a research allowance. This prestigious scholarship provided me with the financial support needed to focus entirely on my studies and research during my Master’s program.
Educational Background
My CGPA is 3.26 in my Bachelor's and 3.54 in my Master's degree in Environmental Sciences. Although my major was Environmental Sciences, I gradually developed a strong interest in GIS during my academic journey. I had the opportunity to complete internships in GIS with both government and private sector organizations, which allowed me to gain practical experience and insight into the field. Additionally, my Master's thesis focused on GIS applications, further strengthening my interest and encouraging me to pursue advanced skills in geospatial analysis.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the University of Leicester and the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship?
I began by filtering universities that offered GIS courses under the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship. Since UK universities only require a language proficiency test, I took the IELTS and scored 7.0. To prepare for the exam, I used online platforms like YouTube and various websites offering free mock tests and practice materials.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think what made my application stand out was my relevant experience with GIS and the volunteer activities I participated in during my academic journey. I also believe that how you answer the application questions and write the motivation letter matters a lot. I tried my best to explain how passionate I am about the course and how it aligns with my goals.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Are Going Through the Process Again?
Honestly, if I could do it again, I wouldn’t doubt or underestimate myself so much. I’ve learned how important it is to trust your own abilities. I would also avoid seeking advice from too many people, as it can become overwhelming and confusing. I would focus on believing in myself a little more and trusting the process.
What Advice Would You Give for Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Just don't give up. Keep applying, and don’t hesitate to reach out to alumni for feedback on your essays. Focus on programs that align with your degree or skillset.
And, it’s okay if you feel like giving up sometimes. We’ve all been there. But believe me, you’ve got this. Keep going, keep dreaming, and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Wishing you all the best of luck! I hope you get the scholarships you’re aiming for. You’ve got what it takes!
