The Journey
My name is Esayas Tekleweyni, and I'm originally from Ethiopia. I hold a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Mekelle Institute of Technology and have practical experience in solar installation projects. Currently, I’m pursuing my master's degree in Renewable Energy at the University of Oldenburg in Germany, with a focus on solar energy. I decided to pursue further education in this field because I’m deeply passionate about sustainable energy solutions. During my time working on solar projects, I saw firsthand the impact renewable technologies can have on communities. That experience inspired me to gain deeper technical knowledge and research skills so I can contribute more effectively to the global transition toward clean energy.
University of Oldenburg Scholarship Details
Before coming to Germany, I was offered a scholarship in Israel to study in the field of photonics. While I appreciated the opportunity, I ultimately decided not to pursue it because my true passion lies in renewable energy. Later, I received a scholarship from the University of Oldenburg in Germany to study Renewable Energy, which aligns perfectly with my long-term goals. The scholarship supports international students and helps cover part of my living and educational expenses. This program and scholarship gave me the chance to focus on the field I’m most passionate about—sustainable energy solutions for the future.
Educational Background
I completed my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Mekelle Institute of Technology in Ethiopia, graduating in 2019 with a GPA of 3.6 out of 4.0. The institute is one of the most competitive engineering schools in the country, and I was awarded a national scholarship to study there based on my academic excellence.
My final year project focused on photovoltaic (PV) systems, which introduced me to the practical aspects of renewable energy. After graduation, I gained around three years of work experience in the renewable energy sector, particularly in solar installation projects aimed at improving energy access in underserved areas. This hands-on experience not only deepened my technical expertise but also strengthened my profile and made me a highly competitive candidate for the scholarship I received.
In addition to academics and work, I actively engaged in community service—mentoring junior students and participating in charity programs. These experiences helped me develop soft skills like leadership and communication, which are essential in the energy sector.
Altogether, my academic background, professional experience, and community involvement prepared me well for the MSc in Renewable Energy at the University of Oldenburg and played a key role in securing the scholarship.
