The Midland African Chamber Foundation Scholarship is worth $2,000.
Educational Background
I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Port Harcourt with a CGPA of 3.75. This solid academic foundation fueled my interest in advanced financial systems and gave me the confidence to explore more complex areas like investment science. It also prepared me well for the rigor of graduate school.
How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Institutions?
I spent a lot of time researching online, browsing university websites, joining international student forums, and watching YouTube videos from students who had walked similar paths.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
All my standardized tests were waived. UNO accepted my undergraduate English-language education as sufficient proof of proficiency.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Scholarship?
I was intentional about telling my story clearly in my statement of purpose, emphasizing my academic achievements, my vision for impact, and my financial need. I also highlighted leadership experiences and community service, which aligned well with the university’s values. For the graduate assistantship, I applied directly to open roles within the university, and my previous work experience helped me stand out.
How Is (was) Your Experience at the Institution?
My experience at UNO was deeply rewarding. I worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Office of Engagement, where I helped coordinate volunteerism and engagement programs. This gave me exposure to meaningful projects, great mentorship, and leadership opportunities.
How Do You Rate the Institution Academically and Why?
UNO offers a strong blend of academic rigor and practical learning. The professors were supportive, and the coursework was challenging in a way that prepared me for real-world application. I particularly appreciated the small class sizes and personalized attention.
How Does the Institution Support International Students?
UNO has a welcoming environment for international students. The International Student Office provided great support with visa guidance, job search help, and cultural adjustment. I also connected with other international students through events and student organizations.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or the Country’s Native Language?
Yes, all classes were conducted in English.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
My application stood out because of my clear vision, leadership background, and strong academic performance. I believe my commitment to financial literacy and using finance as a tool for social good helped me shine. I also took time to tailor every application component to match the institution’s goals.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would have applied to more assistantship opportunities earlier and been more proactive in networking with current graduate assistants. I also would’ve created a timeline to track each part of the scholarship and admission process to reduce last-minute stress.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
- Don’t underestimate your story. Own your background and be bold in sharing your goals.
- Research your target institutions well and connect with current students or alumni.
- Look beyond just scholarships; graduate assistantships and work opportunities can be game-changers.
- Finally, have faith. Doors open for those who prepare and persevere.
