How a Mozambican Engineer Secured the Fully Funded Fulbright Scholarship for a Master's in Petroleum Engineering
University: University of Tulsa
Degree: MSc in Petroleum Engineering
Previous Education: BEng in Petroleum Engineering from the Indian School of Mines, India (First-Class Honors)
Scholarship: Fulbright Scholarship (Fully Funded)

The Journey
My name is Ednilson Mburine, and I am from Mozambique. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering under the Fulbright Scholarship. I have always been passionate about engineering because it challenges you every day to solve real-world problems. I chose petroleum engineering not only due to my love for problem solving but also because the energy sector in my country is rapidly growing. With the global population on the rise, the demand for energy remains a critical issue, and I believe that advancing my education in this field will allow me to contribute meaningfully to both my community and the industry.
I was awarded my Fulbright grant in 2023. For those unfamiliar, the Fulbright Scholarship is a prestigious, competitive, fully-funded program that provides funding for graduate study and research in the United States. It primarily supports master’s and doctoral studies and requires applicants to hold a bachelor’s degree. I earned my Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering from the Indian School of Mines in India, graduating with first-class honors. While having a background in the same field certainly helped me craft a focused and impactful research proposal, Fulbright does not require that your graduate study align exactly with your undergraduate degree as long as you can clearly articulate the importance of the field to your personal and professional goals and its potential impact on your home country.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?
I divided my preparation into two main stages:
Developing a Compelling Personal Statement and Research Proposal
This stage is arguably the most critical part of the application, as it tells the selection committee why you are the best candidate and what difference you will make if selected. To craft an effective personal statement, I answered key questions such as:
-
- Why did I choose Fulbright and the United States for my studies?
- How do my past experiences and future academic/professional goals align with this opportunity?
- In what ways will my education impact my society upon my return?
I also focused on selecting a research topic that was not only relevant and impactful but also aligned well with my intended Master’s program. A well-defined and innovative proposal can significantly enhance your application and attract the attention of both the Fulbright committee and prospective university mentors.
Preparing for Standardized Exams
Fulbright requires strong performance on language and standardized tests (typically TOEFL or Duolingo for language proficiency and the GRE for graduate-level aptitude). I dedicated significant time to studying for these exams by:
-
- Reviewing high-quality online materials from credible sources.
- Taking multiple practice tests and mock exams to build familiarity and confidence, especially for the speaking and listening sections of the language exam.
- Investing in preparation materials directly from ETS when possible, which provided targeted practice and detailed feedback.
What Advice Would You Give for Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
- Invest Time in Your Personal Statement:
Your personal statement is the backbone of your application. Make sure it clearly conveys your motivations, goals, and the unique perspective you bring. - Prepare Thoroughly for Interviews:
Watch videos and read accounts from past Fulbright scholars to gain insights into the interview process and how to present yourself confidently. - Study Strategically for Standardized Exams:
Use reliable study materials, and if possible, invest in quality resources that help you target your weak areas. - Be Clear About Your Research Proposal:
An impactful, well-articulated research proposal not only demonstrates your preparedness but also shows how your work can make a difference at home and abroad.
I wish all potential applicants the best of luck with their Fulbright journeys. With careful preparation and a clear vision for your future, you can create a compelling application that stands out.
Khanimambo,
Ednilson Mburine
