The Journey

My name is Dr. Pamela Ochungo, and I am from Kenya. I have a background in geospatial sciences and a long-standing passion for applying this knowledge to conservation and sustainable development. I pursued a PhD in Conservation Ecology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, under the Faculty of AgriSciences. My academic and professional journey was driven by a desire to use science to address real-world challenges, particularly in biodiversity and land management.

DAAD Scholarship Details

I was awarded the DAAD In-Country/In-Region PhD Scholarship through the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Science (ARPPIS) administered by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe). The scholarship provided full funding for tuition and living expenses and facilitated regional academic collaboration by allowing me to be registered at Stellenbosch University while conducting my research through ICIPE in Kenya.

Educational Background

Prior to my PhD, I held a BSc in Surveying from the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and an MSc in Geoinformation Science from Manchester Metropolitan University (UK). My academic training provided a strong foundation in spatial analysis and environmental data interpretation, skills that were central to my research in conservation ecology. These qualifications, combined with my professional experience, made me well-prepared for doctoral studies.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Stellenbosch University?

Since the ARPPIS programme was linked to ICIPE, I began by exploring research opportunities within their thematic areas and aligning them with my interests. I did not take any standardized tests such as the GRE or TOEFL, as they were not required for this programme. I focused on identifying a host university that would complement my research topic. Stellenbosch University stood out due to its academic excellence and the opportunity to work with Dr. Ruan Veldtman, who later became my supervisor.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Scholarship?

I already had a strong research background, having worked at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) for several years. This experience gave me a clear understanding of how to develop a solid research proposal. I paid close attention to DAAD’s eligibility and evaluation criteria and crafted a proposal that was relevant, feasible, and aligned with ICIPE’s research priorities. I also prepared a strong motivation letter and CV, highlighting my academic background, professional achievements, and long-term goals.

What Was Your Experience at Stellenbosch University Like?

My experience at Stellenbosch University was academically fulfilling and personally rewarding. I worked under the supervision of Dr. Ruan Veldtman, who guided me every step of the way. His mentorship, accessibility, and thoughtful feedback helped me stay focused and productive throughout my studies. The international students' support office was equally helpful and guided me through the university registration and other processes.

At the same time, my experience at ICIPE was equally remarkable. It was a fantastic research institution that provided a stimulating and interdisciplinary environment. I had the privilege of working with a fantastic team of supervisors: Dr. Tobias Landmann, Dr. Elfatih Abdel-Rahman, and Dr. Elliud Muli. Their expertise and guidance were instrumental in shaping the direction of my research and ensuring its successful execution. They supported me not only in refining my methodology and scientific communication but also in navigating practical aspects of data collection, analysis, and collaboration across institutions. The exposure I gained through ICIPE’s vibrant research culture, seminars, and partnerships was invaluable. I would strongly recommend ICIPE to any student seeking high-quality research training in Africa.

How Would You Rate Stellenbosch University Academically and Why?

I would rate Stellenbosch University very highly in terms of academic quality. The university had excellent research infrastructure, world-class faculty, and a supportive environment for postgraduate students. The curriculum and institutional culture encouraged critical thinking, collaboration, and academic rigor.

How Did Stellenbosch University Support International Students?

Stellenbosch University offered strong support services for international students. The international office was efficient and welcoming, assisting with visa processes, accommodation, and integration. These systems made it easier for me to settle in and focus on my academic work without administrative stress.

What Made Your Application Stand Out?

My application stood out because of my solid academic background, strong research experience, and clear alignment with the goals of both DAAD and icipe. I had practical knowledge of research project development and implementation, which gave me an edge in proposal writing. My motivation was also clearly communicated; I demonstrated not just what I wanted to study, but why it mattered and how I intended to use the results.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would seek earlier engagement with former scholars and mentors to get their insights and feedback. Although I had research experience, speaking with people who had already gone through similar scholarship processes would have helped me refine my approach further and prepare more efficiently.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start your preparations early. Take time to understand the objectives of the scholarship programme and tailor your application accordingly. A strong proposal is not just about having a good idea; it’s about being able to communicate it effectively, show its relevance, and demonstrate that you have the capacity to carry it out. Seek feedback, stay organized, and don’t be afraid to reach out for support along the way.
