The Journey
My name is Dr. Ludovick Lopa, a Public Health Physician from Tanzania. Over the past decade, I have walked the path from bedside medicine to strengthening entire health systems, working tirelessly across more than 100 health facilities to improve service delivery, disease surveillance, and data-driven decision-making. Today, I offer Quality Improvement consulting services, helping facilities transform challenges into opportunities to deliver better healthcare.
While my MD and MPH degrees laid the foundation, last year marked a new chapter in my journey—I began an MSc in Healthcare Leadership at Lancaster University, supported by the prestigious Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship. For me, this isn’t just a degree; it’s a toolkit for action. By learning leadership strategies and health system frameworks, I can be more effective in building sustainable, high-performing health systems in Tanzania and across sub-Saharan Africa.
The program’s distance-learning model with yearly residentials is perfect—it allows me to apply what I learn directly to my work, creating immediate impact while growing academically.
The Power of Scholarships in My Journey
Scholarships have been pivotal in my career:
- Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship (2025–2030) – Supporting my MSc in Healthcare Leadership at Lancaster University. (tuition, stipend, travel)
- Research Excellence Scholarship, Hanoi Medical University (2019–2020) – Supporting my MPH studies in Vietnam, where I graduated with distinction and as valedictorian. (tuition, stipend, travel).
- NORAD Sponsorship (2025) – Enabled training in Health Data Analytics at the University of Geneva, giving me foundational skills in R and healthcare analytics. (tuition)
Each scholarship was not just financial support—it was a vote of confidence in my vision and potential to make a difference.
Preparing for the Journey
My path wasn’t linear. Since 2016, I have received conditional offers from universities including Leeds, Liverpool, LSHTM, and Oxford. Scholarships were elusive, and some opportunities had to be deferred. But persistence, preparation, and mentorship paid off. I refined my story, aligned my goals, and learned to present my journey—from clinical medicine to public health to leadership—as a cohesive narrative of impact and growth.
When I applied for the Commonwealth Scholarship, I focused on:
- Aligning my career goals with the scholarship mission
- Demonstrating measurable impact in health systems and quality improvement
- Highlighting leadership roles across facilities and multi-sectoral programs
- Showcasing academic excellence, originality, and a growth mindset
- I did all these with my personalized story
Lessons from My Journey
What made my applications stand out wasn’t just grades or certificates—it was the story of real people, real challenges, and the tangible changes I helped create. It was about showing potential, resilience, and vision.
If I were to do it again, I’d start earlier, apply more broadly, and seek even more feedback.
But the biggest lesson I can share with aspiring scholars is simple:
- Be clear about your “why” – connect your passion with the opportunity.
- Show impact, not just qualifications – let your work speak for itself.
- Tell a compelling story – link your past, present, and future.
- Apply broadly and prepare early – persistence matters.
Scholarships are more than awards—they are opportunities to amplify your impact, shape systems, and lead change. For me, every challenge, every deferment, every application refined my vision. And today, I continue to learn, lead, and contribute, one facility, one team, and one system at a time.
