The Journey
I am Darakhshan Nazir from Pakistan. I recently completed my Fulbright program in December of 2024 as I graduated from Bentley University with an MS in Business Analytics. Prior to this, I worked as a Data Journalist for S&P Global Inc. publishing numerous data-focused articles across technology, media and telecommunication sectors. Alongside, I have been advocating for women’s education and mentorship programs across wide age groups in Pakistan via multiple organizations including Project Girls for Girls and Million Women Mentors.
Motivated by the passion to upscale my data analysis skills and stay ahead in an industry rapidly moving towards technological advancements, along with my grit to increase women's representation in the field, I decided to pursue MS Business Analytics.
Fulbright Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship, a prestigious international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, and airfare, enabling students to focus on their academic and professional growth. I was placed at Bentley University's McCallum Graduate School of Business, where I pursued MS in Business Analytics from Fall 2023 to Fall 2024. Additionally, I received the Dean's Leadership Scholarship from Bentley University, awarded to students who have demonstrated commitment to leadership and social responsibility.
Educational Background
I completed Bachelor's in Business Administration with a major in Finance from Bahria University in Islamabad, Pakistan, graduating with a 3.87 CGPA and consistently making it to the Dean's Honor List for almost all four years. My undergraduate studies provided a strong foundation in financial data analysis and instilled in me the importance of data-driven decision-making.
However, as I transitioned into my role as a Data Journalist/Analyst, I realized the need to enhance my knowledge of advanced data analysis techniques, familiarize myself with emerging technologies, software, and programming languages, and develop the expertise required to excel in this rapidly evolving field. I aspired to assume a leadership role in the industry in the long term and recognized the need to continuously develop my skills.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for Bentley University and the Fulbright Scholarship?
To prepare for my graduate studies, I began planning well in advance, with the Fulbright Scholarship being my top priority since my undergraduate years. I maintained a diary to record my thoughts and ideas for my personal and objective statements, which proved invaluable when crafting my application. I got my statements reviewed from just one person, as I believe too many cooks spoil the broth. As for the standardized tests, I took the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) using official ETS study materials, Magoosh video resources, and a GRE workshop by Saad Amer (GRE 341). Following my selection for the Fulbright Scholarship, I was required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), an English proficiency exam. After a rigorous selection process, my placement at Bentley University came from Fulbright.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I articulated clear and precise goals, backed by relevant experiences and skills, demonstrating how the Master's program would help me achieve my objectives.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would avoid selling myself short. As students from developing countries, we often doubt our potential and underestimate our abilities. I would remind myself to have bigger dreams, believe in my potential, and aim higher.
What Advice Would You Give for Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Build on your own unique story, backed by evidence. Avoid following the crowd and presenting a typical, traditional narrative that may not be entirely genuine. Instead, dare to be different and share your authentic yet relevant story.
