The Journey

My name is Cynthia Ezinne Ohaeri, popularly known as Nigerian Girl In STEM, and I am from Nigeria. I am reading for a postgraduate degree in Sustainability, Enterprise, and the Environment at the University of Oxford. My journey has always been rooted in a deep curiosity about how the world works and how we can make it better. I studied Physics and Astronomy for my undergraduate degree, graduating as Valedictorian with First-Class Honours. Over time, that curiosity evolved into a passion for solving real-world problems, particularly across my work in aviation, energy, climate, and development.

As an education and Girls in STEM advocate, I lead initiatives through my non-profit, the Nigerian Girl In STEM Foundation, where I drive an advocacy aimed at seeing girls exist and thrive outside of societal boxes to create safer and kinder futures for themselves, fulfilling the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 5 (Gender Equality). With over six years of professional experience across the energy and aviation sectors, I have worked in areas spanning petroleum engineering, solar project management, carbon efficiency modelling, and air traffic management.

These experiences shaped my understanding of the urgent need for sustainable transitions and inclusive development. Pursuing further education in Sustainability, Enterprise, and the Environment at the University of Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment was, therefore, a natural progression for me. It is where my technical background, policy interests, and commitment to impact meaningfully intersect.

MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Details

I am privileged to be a recipient of the prestigious MasterCard Foundation Scholarship at the University of Oxford. I am also a recipient of the AfOx-Linacre Norman & Ivy Lloyd scholarships at the University of Oxford. These are fully funded scholarships and provide additional support for leadership development and impact-driven initiatives. I was also nominated for the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship and the Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment Scholarship at the University of Oxford, further reflecting the strength and competitiveness of my application.

Historical Milestone at the University of Oxford

I hold the distinction of being the first Nigerian to study at the University of Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, a historic milestone that underscores the importance of representation and possibility. For me, this achievement is not just personal; it is symbolic. It is a reminder that the spaces we once thought were out of reach are, in fact, within reach. Every milestone I attain carries a deeper purpose: to make the path a little clearer for those coming after me. I hope that when others see my journey, they are encouraged to dream bigger, to reach for what once seemed impossible, and to go even further than I have. My aspiration is not just to succeed, but to inspire a ripple effect of excellence, where others rise, break more barriers, and achieve even greater heights. My greatest hope is that someone, somewhere, sees my journey and dares to dream boldly – to go further, achieve more, and redefine the limits entirely. Ultimately, success is not just about reaching new heights, but about lifting others to surpass them.

Educational Background

I hold a First-Class Honours degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where I graduated as Valedictorian. My academic background equipped me with strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills. It trained me to think rigorously, approach problems systematically, and apply scientific reasoning – skills that have been invaluable in both my professional work and my transition into sustainability and policy. This foundation has been pivotal in shaping my career across energy, climate, and finance, enabling me to approach complex global challenges with both technical depth and strategic insights.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Oxford and the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship?

I approached the application process very intentionally. I focused on aligning my goals with the values of the institution, while clearly demonstrating my impact, leadership, and interdisciplinary thinking within the relevant subject areas. Preparation for scholarships went beyond academics. I took time to reflect deeply on my journey, my purpose, and the impact I want to create. I was intentional about telling a coherent story, connecting my academic background, professional experience, and long-term vision. I also ensured that my applications clearly demonstrated leadership, measurable impact through my work in STEM and sustainability, and a strong sense of purpose.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

For me, generally, titles are not the point. Although I have earned many titles over nearly a decade in social impact and my global career, what truly drives me is expanding how women see themselves, particularly women who have been taught to shrink, wait, and doubt. This is mirrored in the activities I devote my time and self to. Before putting myself to opportunities in world-class settings, I first aligned myself as a world-class talent. Someone with clarity of my “why.” Then I built my social proof around this. I also developed my technical and soft skills. I believe that when you have a portfolio of sustained excellence and impact across various spheres of life, the story tells itself, and it makes it easy to stand out, especially within a sea of excellence at the University of Oxford, where world-class talent converges. Alignment with the virtues of the institution/organization also matters. The more the synergy, the higher the chance of success. To put in a stand-out application, the following reflective questions were key: Is there a target niche? What is the vision and mission or targeted impact of the funding body? Is there a way to tailor one’s profile to this organization? The personal statements and interviews are a great opportunity to let your light shine. There is no need to undersell yourself by trying to be meek. You need to be clear about who you are, why you are seeking that opportunity, what impact you aim to make in the present and future, and how your personal goals align with those of the organization.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

If not now, then when? If not me, then who? This is a personal mantra I live by, and a fail-safe system I shared with my best friend (of blessed memory). It allowed us to graciously embrace great opportunities, knowing we are fully worthy of our accomplishments. On the flip side, when we did not get an opportunity, it gave us the courage to hold our heads high, knowing we would never wish for someone else to lose it on our behalf. My advice to anyone looking to leverage global opportunities would be: Have a clear dream – one you can truly visualize. Visualize your highest self. Be intentional. Take time to understand yourself – your story, your values, and your vision. Do not try to fit into what you think they want. Instead, present your authentic journey clearly and confidently. Also: start early, do your research, seek feedback, apply confidently, and most importantly, believe that these opportunities are possible for you.

What Are the Biggest Takeaways from Your Experience?

If you want something, try. You will never know what is possible if you do not give it your best shot. You might think – What if I fail? But what if it all works out? What if you fly instead? So go out there, put yourself out into the world, and keep the promises you made to yourself. As a personal mantra, my predominant thoughts are always: “Omg, I can’t believe I did that,” rather than “Oh, I wish I did that.” So, I go all in. At the end of the day, I can never lose what I never had in the first place – I can only gain. How can I lose in a world I came into with nothing? So, at every turn, I choose to feel the fear and do it anyway – confident and unafraid.
