The Journey
Hi, I'm Cristina Yumena, currently pursuing an MSc in Accounting and Finance at the University of Exeter. Originally from the Philippines, I had the honor of being a GKS Scholar for the Academic Year 2018. With a passion for Accounting and Finance, I am dedicated to advancing my expertise in this field to contribute meaningfully in the global financial landscape.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I am thrilled to share that I was honoured to receive the prestigious Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), which granted me the incredible opportunity to study at Soonchunhyang University for one year. This fully funded scholarship covered my tuition and provided an additional allowance of 5,552,000 KRW for flight expenses, a monthly stipend, a settlement allowance, and medical insurance. This experience not only broadened my academic horizons but also deepened my cultural understanding. I am truly grateful for this invaluable opportunity and the many doors it has opened for my future.
Educational Background
I began my academic journey by pursuing a Diploma in Accounting and Finance at Temasek Polytechnic, where I achieved a perfect GPA of 4.0 and ranked among the top in my cohort. Building on this strong foundation, I transferred to Bataan Peninsula State University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, where I was honoured to be recognised as a Dean’s Lister in my first year, earning a full tuition scholarship. These formative experiences have been instrumental in shaping both my academic and professional growth, providing a solid platform for my future aspirations.
I consistently took the initiative to lead group projects, honing my leadership and teamwork skills in the process. Additionally, I actively participated in various extracurricular activities, including being involved in the school newspaper, where I further developed my communication and collaboration abilities. These experiences have significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for Soonchunhyang University?
During my time at Temasek Polytechnic, I had the privilege of being part of the official student ambassadors, the 'Temasek Polytechnic PACEsetters'. In addition, to being a consistent Dean's Lister in my first year at Bataan Peninsula State University, I also served as the class representative, would often lead group projects, and contributed to the school newspaper, 'The Defender'. Balancing academic excellence with leadership and extracurricular involvement has been a key part of my journey, shaping me into a well-rounded student.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Global Korea Scholarship?
This achievement marked a significant milestone as the first-ever partnership between my school and Soonchunhyang University, making me the very first GKS scholar from my institution. The selection process was highly competitive, requiring the submission of my academic grades, a personal statement, and an interview with the programme coordinator. Competing against many talented students, I was honoured to be awarded the scholarship. This opportunity allowed me to demonstrate my passion, commitment, and dedication, and I am grateful for the doors it has opened.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe it was a combination of my international academic exposure, active involvement in extracurriculars, and consistent academic performance that helped shape my journey. These experiences have also strengthened my ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, a skill I deeply value.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would focus on refining my personal statement and seek advice from previous GKS scholars on how to strengthen my chances of success. I also wish I had taken the time to learn some Korean beforehand, as it’s the predominant language and would have made navigating daily life and getting around much smoother.
What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Connecting with past GKS alumni can be incredibly valuable for anyone going through the scholarship process. Their insights, tips, and first-hand experiences—often not readily available online—can provide crucial guidance and support throughout the application journey. Additionally, building a strong, supportive friend group is essential. While being far from home can sometimes feel isolating, having friends who understand and support you can make the experience much more rewarding and fulfilling.
