The Journey
My name is Charla Kania Putrisantosa from Jakarta, Indonesia. I completed high school education in Indonesia, and due to my interest in international affairs, I’m currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science at Singapore Management University (SMU).
ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship Details
I was offered the ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship from SMU, available for the undergraduate programme for citizens of ASEAN countries except Singapore. It covers 100% of subsidized undergraduate tuition fees after the MOE Tuition Grant, S$5,800 annual living allowance, a S$1,750 one-time computer allowance upon enrolment, and S$3,000 annual accommodation allowance. Taking the tuition grant along with this scholarship is mandatory, which entails a 3-year working bond in Singapore.
Educational Background
I attended an Indonesian private high school, specifically the natural science stream. I graduated with an average grade of 93.90. I also took part in many co-curricular activities such as leadership programmes, various competitions, and volunteering. I believe a good balance of academic performance and co-curricular involvement shows a good ability to manage commitments and is an appealing trait when applying for scholarships.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Singapore Management University (SMU)?
How Did You Find Information About ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship and the Singapore Management University (SMU)?
I found out about universities from my environment, where many people were interested in applying to universities abroad and scholarships. I also looked through various universities’ online pages to find out more about the scholarships they are offering.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I took IELTS and practiced using various free online resources. These resources were similar to the actual test and prepared me adequately.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship?
I read the application questions carefully and gave myself ample time to craft answers that highlight my strengths. I looked over the criteria the institution is looking for and gave answers that explain why I fit such criteria. My commitment to academic excellence and co-curricular involvement helped to prove and support my answers. Although answers must be carefully thought out, it’s important to remain genuine and show the institution your personality instead of giving an answer that is too polished.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
Strong academic performance, a positive record of co-curricular activities, and community involvement are important to present an all-rounder image, but I think they’re something all applicants definitely have. I received the scholarship news after my group interview, which leads me to believe that showing genuine interest in the programme, being well-spoken, and the ability to have a respectful discussion are a bonus point to make your application appealing.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would’ve started preparing earlier and reached out to current students or recipients of the scholarship, or other international students, in the application process. For most of the application process, I was doing things a bit blindly and didn’t really ask for help from those who have more experience. Starting earlier would have given me more time to prepare and design my answers, and more opportunities to explore. I only decided on going abroad quite late, and most universities closed their application already, or I didn’t have enough time to prepare for the standardized tests demanded. Hence, my application process was a bit rushed and stressful.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Start early, give yourself time to think over your answers and how to plan your application. Have a list of necessary documents you must get or translate, and give yourself deadlines to structure the application process and submit punctually. Lastly, some scholarships may seem too prestigious, and you believe you will never get it, but have the confidence to at least try, or you’ll risk losing a great opportunity.
