The Journey

My name is Chantarapeach UT, an environmental advocate from Cambodia. I work in the sustainability field, focusing on climate change, climate action, youth engagement, and sustainability. Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Public Policy at the Faculty of Wellington School of Business and Government, Victoria University of Wellington, driven by my passion and commitment to contribute to shaping environmental and social policies for a more resilient and sustainable future in Cambodia.

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Details

I am honored to be a fully funded Manaaki New Zealand Scholar, supported by the New Zealand Government through the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships. This prestigious opportunity covers my tuition, travel, and living expenses, enabling me to focus entirely on my studies, research, and professional growth.

Educational Background

I hold two bachelor's degrees from Cambodia: a Bachelor of International Relations from the Institute for International Studies and Public Policy at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and a Bachelor of Economic Science from the University of Economics and Finance. These academic foundations have provided me with a strong understanding of international governance and economic systems, enabling me to analyze trends across policy, economics, trade, and social issues.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for Victoria University of Wellington?

First and foremost, I reviewed my eligibility for the scholarship and the requirements for the postgraduate program and course I wanted to pursue. Since my program required an IELTS score, I booked my exam and prepared using online study materials.

As my study subject required an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6.0, I was eligible with the IELTS overall Band Score of 7.5 and over 2 years of working experience.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship?

I prepared by reaching out to Manaaki New Zealand Scholars to better understand which courses aligned with my interests and career path. I also researched various postgraduate programs, attended information-sharing sessions, and regularly reviewed the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships website for the latest updates.

Most importantly, since the scholarship required extensive documentation, careful preparation was essential, as these documents served as proof of eligibility and played a crucial role in the application process.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe a strong application stands out by highlighting your experience and efforts in your chosen field of study, demonstrating your commitment and passion for making a meaningful impact in your community.

It is essential to showcase your leadership skills, your objectives for pursuing a master's degree, and your plans upon returning to your home country. Clearly outlining your target field and career aspirations reflects your determination to achieve your goals and contribute to your country's development.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Are Going Through the Process Again?

I would have conducted more in-depth research on course selections, as my master's program offers specializations in certain subject areas. However, it's never too late—even after enrollment, you can adjust your coursework by adding or dropping classes that no longer align with your interests during the early stages of the program.

What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

If you're interested in applying for similar scholarships, it's important to carefully research which study program best aligns with your goals and passions while also contributing to your professional growth.

Additionally, review the scholarship coverage in detail to see if there are any additional support options available to enhance your studies. It's also beneficial to seek out support groups in advance to ensure you have a strong network and a safe space, as you may face challenges or experience homesickness during your time abroad.
