The Journey

My name is Benson Innocent Edobor, and I am from Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. I am pursuing a master’s degree in Global Political Economy and Development in Germany, supported by the prestigious DAAD Leadership for Africa scholarship. In addition to being a DAAD scholar, I am also a Salzburg Global Fellow. I have an academic background in Political Science and a strong passion for governance and policy analysis, especially within the context of the Global South. I plan to pursue a PhD in Public Policy to contribute to impactful, equity-focused research and reform.

DAAD Scholarship details

I am proud to be a recipient of the DAAD – Leadership for Africa scholarship, which has allowed me to pursue a master’s degree in Global Political Economy and Development at the University of Kassel (Universität Kassel) in Germany. This fully funded scholarship offers comprehensive support to students, including:

  • A 6-month intensive German language course (before the start of the program)
  • A monthly stipend of €992
  • Full health, accident, and personal liability insurance coverage in Germany
  • A travel allowance
  • An annual study allowance
  • Additional financial support, where applicable, including a monthly rent subsidy and allowances for accompanying family members (spouse and/or children)

This generous scholarship has supported my academic journey and provided me with the stability and resources to fully focus on my studies and professional growth.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes, three different institutions nominated me for the fully funded Commonwealth Shared Scholarship in the United Kingdom. However, after careful consideration, I ultimately chose the DAAD—Leadership for Africa scholarship because it aligned more closely with my academic goals and provided broader opportunities for long-term involvement in development policy and international cooperation.

Educational Background

I hold a Diploma in Law (with Distinction), a Nigeria Certificate in Education in Political Science and Social Studies (also with Distinction), and a First-Class Honours degree in Political Science and Public Administration. My strong academic record at all levels has thoroughly prepared me for postgraduate studies. Outside of academics, I actively took on several leadership roles during my undergraduate years and volunteered with multiple non-governmental organizations. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of governance and development issues but also provided me with practical skills that have been invaluable in my current academic pursuits.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?

I began my scholarship preparation by subscribing to platforms that frequently share global scholarship opportunities. Global Scholarship was one of the main sites I relied on. I also followed previous scholarship awardees in my field on social media and YouTube to learn from their experiences. A key part of my preparation involved thoroughly researching each scholarship and the institutions I was interested in. I carefully examined the eligibility criteria, noting those I met and identifying areas for improvement. This helped me tailor my application materials accordingly.

I took the IELTS exam and scored an overall band of 8.0. However, before receiving the official results, I also obtained a letter from my undergraduate university confirming that English was the medium of instruction. When preparing my scholarship essays, I watched several YouTube tutorials and studied sample essays shared by past scholars. I gradually drafted and refined my essays to ensure they reflected my academic background, career goals, and personal motivation. Additionally, I anticipated potential interview questions and thoroughly familiarized myself with all the requirements for the application process.

How Is Your Experience at the University of Kassel?

Overall, my experience at the University of Kassel has been positive. Adjusting to a new environment initially posed challenges, especially regarding cultural differences and settling in, but over time, I found my footing. Academically, the institution offers strong support and maintains high standards. My program, Global Political Economy and Development, is both demanding and intellectually stimulating while giving students some flexibility to explore related interests.

How Does the University of Kassel Support International Students?

The university is very supportive of international students. Offices like the International Office and Promote Your Career initiative have been crucial in helping us settle in, access resources, and build professional networks.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or in German?

All my classes are held in English, which makes academic integration smoother for non-German speakers. However, we are strongly encouraged to learn German to help with broader societal integration.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing German?

Students can thrive in the classroom without speaking German, especially in English-taught programs. However, outside of school, not knowing the native language can cause daily life difficulties, such as dealing with bureaucracy, social interactions, or accessing public services, so learning German is very helpful.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

What made my application stand out was the authenticity and resilience shown in my story. Having received several rejection letters in the past, I approached this application with a renewed mindset based on perseverance. I shared my journey not just as a list of achievements but as a story of growth, resilience, and impact. I highlighted my leadership roles, ongoing volunteer work, and strong dedication to community development. By connecting my personal experiences to my academic and professional goals, I was able to make a convincing case for why I was a great fit for the scholarship.

What Would You Have Done Differently If You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I went through the process again, I would believe in myself more. During the application journey, I struggled with self-doubt, constantly questioning if I was good enough or if my story mattered. Looking back, I see that confidence is just as important as preparation. Trusting my abilities and owning my journey would have made the process less stressful and more fulfilling.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

For anyone planning to apply for a similar scholarship, my biggest advice is to start early. Keep a close eye on scholarship announcements and begin preparing your documents and essays well before the deadline. Take the time to research the scholarship thoroughly, understand its goals, values, and what it looks for in candidates. Study the stories of past recipients to gain practical insights, and don’t hesitate to reach out to them if possible. When writing your application, avoid generic responses; instead, highlight your unique story, experiences, and motivations. Clearly align your personal and professional goals with the values of the scholarship and the academic program you’re applying to. Starting your essays early gives you time to reflect, revise, and ensure your voice truly comes through. Most importantly, believe that your story is worth sharing.
