The Journey

My name is Beatrice Somuah, and I am from Nkawkaw, a small town nestled in the Kwahu Mountains in the Eastern Region of Ghana. I am currently pursuing a Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management at the University of British Columbia (UBC) as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar. Growing up in a region vulnerable to environmental degradation and socio-economic challenges has deeply shaped my passion for geography and the environment. My long-term vision is to transform underserved communities in Africa into sustainable, climate-resilient urban spaces.

Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Details

I am honored to have received the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at UBC, which provides full tuition, living expenses, travel, and academic support. This scholarship is more than just financial aid; it is a leadership journey. Although I received admission offers from other universities, UBC’s Geomatics for Environmental Management program perfectly aligned with my goals, as well as the Mastercard Foundation’s mission to empower changemakers.

Educational Background

I graduated with First Class Honours in Geography from the University of Education, Winneba, in Ghana. My academic success, coupled with my active community involvement and leadership roles, laid a strong foundation for graduate studies. Courses such as GIS, urban planning, and environmental studies were more than just academic interests; they were closely tied to the real-world challenges I witnessed growing up.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of British Columbia?

I began my application process by researching programs that aligned with my passion for climate resilience and spatial data science. I connected with past scholars, attended online webinars, and utilized platforms like Scholarship Region, LinkedIn, and university websites. Although UBC waived the GRE/IELTS requirement due to my prior education in English, I focused on crafting a compelling Statement of Purpose and a strong resume.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship?

The application process was holistic. I reflected deeply on my personal story, the challenges I faced, and the impact I aspired to create. I sought feedback from mentors and past scholars and revised my essays multiple times. I highlighted my leadership in community development, particularly my role as a radio show host at the University of Education, Winneba, where I focused on the SDGs. I also showcased my TrashCash campaign, which I initiated to reduce plastic pollution both on campus and in my community.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe the authenticity of my story made my application stand out. I did not try to portray a perfect image; instead, I shared the realities of growing up in a low-income community and how those experiences fueled my passion for change. My combination of academic excellence, leadership in environmental and social causes, and my storytelling skills (through radio hosting, podcasting, and poetry) demonstrated that I could use communication to drive meaningful impact.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I had to go through the process again, I would start earlier, especially in reaching out to professors and refining my personal statement. I would also create a more structured timeline for collecting recommendation letters and submitting applications to avoid the stress of last-minute preparations.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is to be genuine and let your story shine. Scholarships like the Mastercard Foundation are not solely interested in grades; they seek individuals with potential, purpose, and a commitment to their communities. Share your values, your vision, and how you have already made a difference, no matter how small. And remember, do not go through the process alone; seek guidance from mentors and connect with other applicants.
