Master’s Water Resources Engineering Student Baibrus Khan from Pakistan Shares His Journey of Studying at the University of Stuttgart, Germany

My name is Baibrus Khan, and I am from Pakistan, originally from Quetta. Growing up in Quetta, I witnessed firsthand the challenges of water scarcity in an arid region where groundwater is the primary source of supply. Over the years, excessive extraction of groundwater, coupled with limited natural recharge, has placed the aquifer under serious stress, leading to declining water tables and raising concerns about long-term sustainability. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from BUITEMS, Quetta, and later pursued a Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management from the University of Stuttgart, Germany. I chose to specialize further in this field to develop a deeper technical understanding of water systems and to contribute to sustainable solutions for regions facing water stress. My motivation has been strongly influenced by the situation in Balochistan, where ineffective water management and over-reliance on groundwater continue to threaten water security, making it essential to adopt more sustainable and integrated approaches to water resource management.

DAAD STIBET I Scholarship Details

I pursued my Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management at the University of Stuttgart through self-financing, as the WAREM program was not offered under a DAAD scholarship at the time of my enrollment. The tuition fee was approximately €1500 per semester.

During my studies, I was awarded the DAAD STIBET I scholarship for a period of three months. This scholarship provided financial support of €500 per month and was granted in recognition of my strong academic performance as well as my active involvement in student initiatives related to gender, diversity, and equality.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

I did not receive any other scholarship during my Master's. I was awarded two years in a row with provincial government scholarship during my bachelors, called BEEF.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from BUITEMS, Quetta, Pakistan, where I graduated with a GPA of 3.52/4.00. I then pursued a Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management from the University of Stuttgart, achieving a German grade of 2.2.

My academic background provided a strong foundation in key areas such as fluid mechanics, hydrology, hydraulics, and environmental engineering, which I further specialized in during my Master’s through courses in integrated water resources management, groundwater modeling, and urban water systems. My MSc thesis on geostatistical groundwater modeling using MATLAB enhanced my ability to analyze spatial data, interpret hydrogeological behavior, and apply quantitative methods to real-world water challenges.

These academic experiences have directly supported my professional role as a Wet Utilities Design Engineer, where I work on the planning and design of water supply, sewerage, and stormwater drainage systems for both rural and urban environments in Pakistan. The technical knowledge gained during my studies allows me to carry out hydraulic design, demand assessment, and system optimization effectively. Additionally, my exposure to advanced modeling and analytical tools has improved my ability to develop practical, data-driven solutions in complex field conditions.

Working on foreign-funded development projects, including those supported by organizations like the World Bank and Agence Française de Développement, requires adherence to international design standards, sustainability principles, and rigorous documentation practices. My educational background has prepared me well for these demands, enabling me to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical implementation while addressing the unique infrastructural and environmental challenges in Pakistan.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Stuttgart?

For my Master’s application, I specifically targeted the Water Resources Engineering and Management (WAREM) program at the University of Stuttgart based on a few key considerations. Firstly, the program is well-recognized as one of the leading international programs in water resources in Germany, offering a strong balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Secondly, the application process was comparatively straightforward, as it did not require submission through uni-assist, which reduced both the time and cost involved in applying.

In terms of application requirements, I primarily needed to have my academic documents attested and to demonstrate English language proficiency. For this, I took the IELTS Academic, in which I achieved an overall band score of 8.00. Since the program was not offered under a DAAD or Fulbright scholarship at the time, I applied directly to the university without the need for additional standardized tests such as the GRE or GMAT.

Regarding scholarships, I stayed informed through official university channels. During my studies, I learned about the DAAD STIBET I scholarship through the International Zentrum (IZ) at the University of Stuttgart. The application process for this scholarship was relatively simple and involved submitting an application form. The selection was primarily based on academic performance as well as involvement in extracurricular, social, and diversity-related activities, rather than additional testing.

How is Your Experience at the University of Stuttgart?

My experience at the University of Stuttgart was extremely positive and enriching. The institution is very welcoming toward international students and fosters a supportive and inclusive environment. The academic culture is vibrant, and both faculty and administrative staff are approachable and helpful, which made it easier to adapt to a new country and education system.

A significant part of my studies coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which was a challenging period globally. However, the way the university managed the situation was commendable. They ensured continuity in education by transitioning effectively to online and hybrid modes without compromising academic standards. At the same time, they remained highly considerate of students’ well-being, particularly international students. Measures such as reducing or waiving semester fees and facilitating access to safe, on-campus student jobs provided much-needed financial and logistical support during uncertain times.

Beyond academics, my time at the university allowed me to build meaningful connections and friendships with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Overall, it was a highly rewarding experience that contributed not only to my professional growth but also to my personal development, leaving me with lasting memories and a strong international network.

How Do You Rate the University of Stuttgart Academically?

I would rate the University of Stuttgart very highly from an academic perspective. The institution provides a well-rounded and supportive learning environment, particularly for international students. The large and diverse international student community fosters collaboration, cultural exchange, and a broader academic perspective.

The faculty members are highly experienced, approachable, and committed to student learning, which significantly enhances the overall academic experience. In addition, the university offers excellent infrastructure and facilities that support both theoretical and practical learning. For instance, access to specialized facilities such as wastewater treatment plants for hands-on learning and the advanced VEGAS (Versuchsanstalt für Wasserbau, Hydrologie und Glaziologie) hydraulics laboratory provides valuable exposure to real-world engineering applications.

The campus itself is well-equipped with modern amenities, creating a conducive environment for study and research. Overall, the combination of strong academic resources, practical learning opportunities, and a supportive atmosphere makes it a highly reputable institution in the field of water resources engineering.

How Does the University of Stuttgart Support International Students?

The University of Stuttgart provides strong and well-structured support for international students across academic, financial, and social aspects. One of the key forms of support is financial flexibility, students facing unforeseen circumstances may receive relief such as deferred or waived semester fees. In addition, the university offers access to scholarships, including short-term funding opportunities, to help ease financial burdens.

Students are also supported through employment opportunities such as HiWi (student assistant) jobs, which not only provide financial assistance but also valuable academic and professional experience within the university.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or German?

It was an international program, so all classes were conducted in English.

What Did You Pursue After the DAAD STIBET I Scholarship?

I came back to my country, to be exact to my home town and worked in an engineering consulting firm on a project which was  the very reason I studied water resources engineering in the first place. The project was on the master planning of water resources of my home town, especially related to groundwater recharge, extractions, water supply, etc.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing German?

Not really, but it is better to have the German language skills if you are pursuing studies in Germany. Academically the whole program was in English, but you do have the choice of picking selective subjects on your own choice. This limits your catalogue if you only speak English. As there are many interesting courses that you can take from other programs but they are German taught courses.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe that while my academic performance, such as a strong GPA and an overall band score of 8.0 in the IELTS Academic, played an important role, the most impactful part of my application to the University of Stuttgart was my personal statement.

Coming from Quetta, a region facing significant water scarcity, I was able to present a clear and authentic motivation for pursuing higher studies in water resources. The challenges in my region, such as over-extraction of groundwater, limited recharge, the impacts of climate change, and additional pressure due to the influx of Afghan refugees, have created serious concerns for long-term water sustainability.

In my personal statement, I connected these real-world issues with my academic goals, emphasizing my commitment to gaining advanced knowledge in water resources engineering and eventually contributing to sustainable solutions in my home region. This alignment between my background, academic interests, and long-term vision made my application more compelling and purpose-driven, which I believe helped it stand out.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would not change much, as I believe my overall approach was effective. However, one key improvement I would make is to begin learning the German language much earlier, ideally from the moment I decided to pursue my studies in Germany.

Starting early would have allowed me to build a stronger foundation in the language, which takes time and consistent effort to develop. While English was sufficient for my academic program at the University of Stuttgart, having a working knowledge of German would have further enhanced my overall experience, particularly in daily life, social integration, and professional interactions. Learning the language in advance would also make the transition smoother and open up more opportunities during and after my studies.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My key advice for anyone applying for a similar scholarship is to start preparation well in advance of the official application period. Having all the required documents, a refined personal statement, and a clear application strategy ready beforehand allows you to apply early and present a more competitive application.

If you have around three or more years of relevant professional experience, it is beneficial to target programs that are linked with scholarships such as those offered by the DAAD. In such cases, your professional experience after your bachelor’s degree can play a significant role in strengthening your application profile.

Another important aspect is to begin drafting your personal statement early and continuously refine it over time. As your academic and professional journey evolves, you can incorporate new experiences, achievements, and a clearer vision of your long-term goals. This makes your application more coherent and impactful.

Additionally, I strongly recommend investing time in learning the German language. Even if your chosen program is in English, having German language skills can significantly enhance your experience, improve daily interactions, and provide an added advantage both during your studies and in your future career opportunities.
