My academic journey was characterised by a strong focus on STEM subjects. During my IGCSEs and A-Levels, I particularly excelled in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science. My scholarship search was thorough and systematic. I spent several months researching every possible funding opportunity for international students at top UK universities. I went through scholarship pages on individual university websites, explored scholarship databases, and joined online forums where students shared their experiences.

To be honest, I looked through so many scholarship websites and university portals that I can't even remember all their names now! But this extensive research was crucial, and it helped me understand what different institutions were looking for and which scholarships I was actually eligible for. I created a spreadsheet to track deadlines, requirements, and application statuses, which kept me organized throughout the process.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Tests Taken:

SAT: 1500/1600

IELTS: 8.5/9.0

For both the SAT and IELTS, I did some targeted preparation about two weeks before each test (which was quite last-minute). I focused on familiarising myself with the test format, timing, and question types rather than learning new content. I took a couple of practice tests to understand the structure and identify any weak areas I needed to review quickly.

If you have strong English skills and a solid academic foundation, don't stress excessively about these tests. However, I'd recommend giving yourself at least a few weeks to a month with official test materials. I was fortunate that my last-minute approach worked, but more preparation time would have made me feel more comfortable and possibly improved my scores even further.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship?

The scholarship application process required careful attention to several components. I focused on crafting a compelling personal statement that clearly articulated my motivations for studying CS, my background, and my future goals. I made sure to align my application with UCL's values of academic excellence and making a positive impact on society.

I gathered all required documents early, including academic transcripts, test scores, and reference letters. I asked teachers who knew me well and could speak to both my academic abilities and personal character. I gave them plenty of notice and provided them with information about the scholarship and why I was applying to UCL.

Looking back, I wish I had started the process even earlier and spent more time on multiple drafts of my personal statement. The application process can be time-consuming, especially when applying to multiple institutions, so giving yourself buffer time is essential.

How is (was) Your Experience at the University College London? 

My experience at UCL has been nothing short of amazing. The university offers an intellectually stimulating environment where I'm constantly challenged and supported to grow. Our CS department brings together students from diverse backgrounds, creating a collaborative learning atmosphere where we can learn from each other's perspectives.

UCL provides extensive support systems for students, including academic tutoring, mental health services, and career guidance. The lecturers are not only experts in their fields but also genuinely invested in student success. The facilities, from state-of-the-art computer labs to collaborative study spaces, provide everything needed to excel academically!

Beyond academics, London itself offers incredible opportunities. From networking events and hackathons to cultural experiences that enrich the university experience, being in a global city has expanded my horizons and professional network in ways I hadn't anticipated.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Strong Academic Record: My consistent performance across IGCSEs and A-Levels demonstrated my capability to handle rigorous academic work.

Clear Motivation: Growing up in Southeast Asia gave me a unique perspective on technology's potential impact, which I conveyed authentically in my application.

Demonstrated Interest: Beyond coursework, I have undertaken independent programming projects and hackathons that showed genuine passion for Computer Science rather than just academic obligation.

Coherent Narrative: My application told a clear story. My background, my interest in technology, my specific reason for choosing UCL, and how I planned to use my education were all pieced together coherently.

Attention to Detail: I ensured every part of my application was carefully prepared, with no errors or missing components.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would dedicate more time to multiple drafts of my personal statement. While mine was successful, I think with more revision and feedback, it could have been even stronger. I'd start writing at least two months before the deadline rather than leaving it closer to submission.

Additionally, I would conduct more in-depth research about the specific programs, professors, and research opportunities at each institution. This would have allowed me to make my applications more tailored and demonstrated deeper knowledge of what each university offered.

Starting the entire process earlier also would have reduced stress and allowed for better quality applications. I would recommend beginning research and preparation at least 6-8 months before deadlines.

Lastly, I would have reached out to current students or alumni earlier to learn about their experiences. Their insights would have been valuable in both the application process and preparation for university life.
