The Journey

My name is Avinash Sekhar, I’m 25 years old, and I’m from India. I pursued a Master’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at LMU Munich, Germany. My primary consideration behind choosing this degree was to pursue a research career. By the time I finished high school, I had already developed a strong interest in biological sciences. To me, research meant more than just piecing together a puzzle to uncover something extraordinary; it also meant contributing to science and society in a meaningful way. My long-term goal is to pursue an interdisciplinary research path that integrates deep learning methods with experimental validation to advance targeted therapies for neurodegenerative disorders.

Currently, I am an incoming PhD candidate at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence (MPI-BI), enrolled in the IMPRS (International Max Planck Research School) structured PhD program. Programs like IMPRS are typically fully funded, with doctoral students employed on a contract basis that includes a competitive salary and social security benefits.

I am also in the process of applying for external fellowships, such as the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) PhD Fellowship. If awarded, students usually have the choice between accepting the fellowship or remaining on their employment contract. In most cases, fellows choose the employment contract, as it includes comprehensive social security coverage, which the non-taxable BIF stipend does not provide. In such scenarios, the fellowship funds are redirected to support the host lab instead.

Free Tuition Details

My master’s degree was at LMU Munich; however, I didn’t receive any scholarship. Education in German public universities is generally free, with a nominal semester fee of 85 euros, as in my case, but this varies from one university to the other. International students need to have a blocked account with funds equivalent to living costs for a year, which is how I went to Germany to pursue my master’s degree. But several German Scholarships are available that international students can apply for, although, to my knowledge, they all require a B2 level of German proficiency.

Educational Background

I hold a triple major Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Genetics, completed in India with a CGPA of 9.86/10, graduating top of my class. This broad and intensive curriculum gave me a strong foundation across key domains in life sciences and allowed me to refine my focus toward a specific research niche. In addition to coursework, I actively pursued certificate programs with proctored exams to deepen my understanding. I recognized, early on, the importance of self-driven learning to stay updated in a constantly evolving field, and these efforts not only strengthened my academic profile but also gave me clarity about my long-term goals.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to LMU Munich?

Once I had decided on Germany as my study destination, the application process became relatively streamlined. My decision was based on several factors:

  • High-quality research output in the life sciences
  • Minimal or no tuition fees at public universities
  • Availability of scholarships
  • Safe and welcoming environment
  • Opportunities for internships and lab rotations in world-class institutes

I gathered information through extensive online research, student forums, and university websites. During my application cycle, standardized tests like the TOEFL or GRE were not required for my program. However, for students who do need to take them, I strongly recommend focusing equally on practice and application, which is often more effective than purely theoretical study.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Scholarship?

Though I didn’t receive a scholarship during my studies, my general approach to scholarship applications is to start early and focus on key components that require time and thought, such as the statement of purpose or motivation letter. These essays should communicate one’s academic motivation, goals, and how the scholarship will help one achieve them. Tailoring each application specifically to the scholarship's values can significantly improve the chances.

How Do You Rate LMU Munich Academically and Why?

I would rate my experience at LMU Munich a solid 9/10. I enjoyed the flexibility in choosing courses, the diverse academic offerings, and the freedom to create opportunities for myself. For instance, I was able to secure student assistantships (HiWi positions), lab rotations, and participate in ongoing research projects relatively easily. That said, I’ve come to realize this varies from student to student; some of my peers found it more challenging to organize thesis projects or HiWi positions. Nonetheless, the overall environment was very conducive to my academic and professional growth.

How Does LMU Munich Support International Students?

LMU offers extensive support for international students, including:

  • Help with finding accommodation
  • Assistance with bureaucratic procedures (resident registration, visa/residence permits)
  • Dedicated international offices
  • Access to LMU study scholarships (650 euros/month) and the Deutschlandstipendium (300 euros/month)

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or German?

All of my courses (lectures, seminars, and practical courses) were exclusively conducted in English. Most Master's programs in Germany, particularly in STEM,  are conducted in English. Some very specific degrees may have course components that are either hybrid or in German.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing German?

In my experience, not knowing German posed no academic challenges. However, for non-academic opportunities like internships in industry or part-time jobs, knowing German is a significant advantage, even if English is commonly used in the workplace.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe what set my application apart was the clarity of purpose and my passion for research. I was able to communicate my motivation, academic curiosity, and long-term vision effectively, which likely demonstrated my readiness for a rigorous scientific environment.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would definitely learn German up to at least B2 level before arriving. This would have opened up more scholarship opportunities, improved social integration, and expanded my options for internships and part-time roles.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice would be:

  • Learn German, even if your course is in English
  • Be genuinely passionate and clear about your goals
  • Start early, plan thoroughly, and be relentless
  • Tailor your application; one size does not fit all
  • Make use of student communities, forums, and university resources
