My name is Archie Kenichi Prayogo, and I was born and raised in Indonesia. I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship Details

I am a recipient of the ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship, a prestigious award offered by the Singapore Government to support ASEAN citizens pursuing undergraduate studies in Singapore. Valued at approximately S$100,000, the scholarship provides full coverage of my subsidized tuition fees for all four years of study, along with several additional allowances. These include a living allowance of S$5,800 per academic year, an accommodation allowance of S$3,000 per academic year, and a one-time computer allowance of S$1,750.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

Although I was not offered any additional scholarships, I was given the opportunity to apply for the Goh Keng Swee Scholarship within the same time frame as applying for the ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship. This is a highly prestigious private-sector scholarship administered by the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS). Established by Singapore’s financial community in honour of former Deputy Prime Minister Dr Goh Keng Swee.

Educational Background

Before entering university, I completed both the Indonesian national curriculum and the International Cambridge A-Levels, where I undertook Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Biology. Over the course of my three-year pre-university education, I maintained an average score of 95.6 on my national report card. In addition, I achieved 4 A* grades in my A-Levels. Beyond academics, I actively participated in a range of competitions, including math and science competitions, which further strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills. These experiences collectively prepared me for the rigorous academic environment at NTU and nurtured the discipline and curiosity I bring to my studies today.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Nanyang Technological University?

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Nanyang Technological University?

My primary sources of information were senior students and independent online research. I frequently relied on social media platforms to stay updated on scholarship opportunities and reputable institutions. I first learned about NTU through word-of-mouth from my seniors, who consistently described it as an excellent university for pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering. Their experiences and recommendations strongly influenced my decision to explore NTU further.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes, I took both the SAT and IELTS examinations. To prepare, I adopted a disciplined approach by consistently practicing with past papers and online question banks. I found that making full use of internet resources was crucial to performing well. For the SAT, I relied heavily on the official CollegeBoard question bank, while for the IELTS, I made extensive use of practice materials from the official IELTS website. Additionally, I supplemented my preparation with YouTube tutorials, which provided valuable tips and strategies to excel in both examinations.

How is (was) Your Experience at Nanyang Technological University?

I would describe my experience in NTU as both enjoyable and academically demanding. The university provides a vibrant environment filled with opportunities, from CCAs and competitions to hackathons and workshops. NTU offers far more than a place to study. It is a platform that encourages students to strengthen their soft skills, broaden their perspectives, and grow holistically.

How Do You Rate Nanyang Technological University Academically and Why?

I would rate my institution as highly academically rigorous. NTU brings together students from a wide range of international curricula, which creates a competitive and intellectually stimulating learning environment. The pace of teaching is fast, and students are expected to quickly grasp complex concepts, think critically, and apply theories to unfamiliar problems.

As a current freshman, one of the most challenging aspects for me has been adapting to the demands of university-level coursework. I am still taking the Physics module (PH1011), which many students, including myself, find to be particularly rigorous. The module requires strong mathematical foundations, deep conceptual understanding, and the ability to solve challenging application-based questions. Weekly tutorials, continuous assessments, and the expectation to teach yourself ahead of lectures make the learning process intense but rewarding.

Overall, NTU’s academic rigour pushes students to develop discipline, resilience, and strong study habits. Although it can be demanding, I believe it ultimately prepares us well for future academic and professional challenges.

How Does Nanyang Technological University Support International Students?

All classes are conducted in English. However, you will also be given the opportunity to pursue modules for various languages, like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe what made my application stand out was the fact that it was genuinely well-rounded. While strong academic performance is highly valued in Singapore, I made sure to complement my grades with active participation in CCAs, various competitions, and meaningful leadership roles. These experiences demonstrated not only my capabilities but also my willingness to contribute beyond the classroom.

Additionally, I placed great emphasis on crafting thoughtful and well-written essays that clearly expressed my motivations and long-term goals. I made sure to show genuine interest in the degree I intended to pursue, highlighting how my past experiences, strengths, and aspirations aligned with the program.

Most importantly, I aimed to present myself as someone who is different, someone who is not afraid to pursue their passions wholeheartedly. Whether through my academic interests, extracurricular involvement, or personal projects, I wanted my application to reflect authenticity, curiosity, and a sincere drive to grow. I believe this combination of academic excellence, diverse experiences, and genuine passion helped my application stand out among others.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

One thing I would have done differently is to approach opportunities with greater seriousness and commitment. During my application process, I was offered the chance to become one of the school ambassadors. However, I did not prioritize it at the time and, as a result, I did not secure the position. Looking back, I realize how valuable such experiences can be, not just for strengthening an application but for personal growth and exposure.

My advice to future applicants is simple: seize every opportunity that comes your way and take each one seriously. You never know which experience might open doors, shape your character, or set you apart from others. Treat every opportunity as a chance to learn, grow, and show your best self.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to future scholars is to stay true to who you are. Don’t try to fit into a mould or become someone you think admissions committees want to see; authenticity is far more powerful. Show your genuine passion for the field you want to pursue, because passion is something that cannot be faked and is often what sets applicants apart.

Be open to taking on leadership roles, joining extracurricular activities, and participating in competitions. These experiences help you grow, discover new strengths, and build confidence. Don’t be afraid to try new things, even if they seem intimidating at first. And just as importantly, don’t fear rejection. You only need one acceptance, one opportunity, for everything to fall into place, so be confident and apply widely.

When opportunities come your way, take them seriously and make the most of them. Avoid procrastination and stay consistent, because small efforts add up over time. Above all, enjoy the application process. It’s a journey of self-discovery, growth, and reflection. Embrace it, and trust that being your authentic self will take you far.
