The Journey
Hello! My name is Rishabh Trikha, and I’m originally from Uttar Pradesh, India. I completed my Bachelor's in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, A.K.T.U. (formerly known as Government College of Architecture, Lucknow) and am currently pursuing a Master of Technology in Infrastructure Systems at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. My interest lies at the intersection of urban planning and mobility systems, and I’ve always been passionate about solving real-world challenges in transport infrastructure. This passion drove me to pursue higher studies in this field, focusing on sustainable and efficient urban transport solutions for developing countries like India.
DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship Details
In 2024, I was awarded the DAAD KOSPIE (German Academic Exchange Service - Indo-German Partnership) scholarship, which gave me the opportunity to pursue a research semester at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, from September 2024 to April 2025. This fully funded scholarship, offered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), covers living expenses, insurance, and travel support. The program enabled me to work on my master’s thesis under the guidance of German faculty, Prof. Dr. Tobias Kuhnimhof at the Chair of Urban and Transport Planning, RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and engage in cutting-edge research on transport and spatial planning.
It’s worth noting that to be eligible for this scholarship, there is a strict academic requirement: applicants must secure a minimum of 8.5 SGPA in their first semester of the master’s program. I was fortunate to qualify with a 9.2 SGPA, which helped strengthen my application and secure my nomination from IIT Roorkee.
Educational Background
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Architecture, and during my studies, I developed a strong interest in urban transportation systems and infrastructure design. My academic training gave me the tools to understand both physical and spatial planning aspects, which I’ve now built upon during my master’s studies. At IIT Roorkee, I’ve studied advanced subjects in transportation planning, traffic modeling, and GIS, all of which laid the foundation for my thesis work. My academic consistency and domain focus made me a strong candidate for international research opportunities.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Institutions?
Since KOSPIE is a structured exchange program, I first went through my institute’s international office to understand the nomination process. I then researched potential host universities and professors in Germany whose work aligned with my thesis. I carefully went through their publications and current projects before reaching out to one of the professors at RWTH Aachen with a tailored email describing my research proposal and academic goals. This led to a successful match and acceptance from the host university.
How Did You Prepare for Standardized Tests?
For the KOSPIE program, standardized tests like the GRE or IELTS were not mandatory since I was nominated by an Indian institute where the medium of instruction is English. However, for broader applications, I had previously prepared for the IELTS, and I recommend others keep these scores ready, especially if they are planning for other European or international programs simultaneously.
How Did You Prepare to apply for the DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship?
My preparation involved drafting a strong Statement of Purpose, updating my CV, and writing a clear research proposal for my thesis. I also sought recommendation letters from faculty members at IIT Roorkee. One of the most important steps was approaching a German professor with aligned research interests, as the KOSPIE program requires a confirmed academic supervisor at the host institution. I kept my documents focused, honest, and tailored for this specific program.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe it was a combination of three things:
- Strong academic performance (especially my 9.2 SGPA in the first semester),
- A well-defined research topic that is globally relevant, and
- My ability to communicate how this international research experience would enhance my thesis and long-term academic goals.
I also made sure to customize every part of my application to reflect my genuine interest and preparedness for this opportunity.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would start my professor outreach a bit earlier, allowing more time to build academic relationships. I would also invest more time in learning basic German before the exchange to make day-to-day interactions smoother. Additionally, I would explore publishing opportunities or collaborations more proactively during my stay in Germany.
What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Start early, stay organized, and don’t hesitate to ask for help from seniors or professors. Focus on your academics—because the 8.5 SGPA requirement is non-negotiable—and develop a clear research direction. Reach out to professors with well-thought-out emails. Most importantly, be honest in your application and let your passion reflect in your writing. This scholarship is not just about grades—it's about potential and purpose.
