The Journey

My name is Anum Shahid, and I belong to Pakistan. I am a Commonwealth Shared Scholar 2023 - 2024, and have recently completed an MA in International Relations from the University of Portsmouth, UK. I have diverse work experience working with NGOs, research institutes, and educational institutions. Throughout my professional career, I developed skills like research and writing, effective communication, and critical thinking. I decided to broaden my knowledge and horizons to effectively work for the betterment of society after getting a quality education in the UK. That compelled me to apply for the aforementioned scholarship.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Details

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is a fully-funded UK government scholarship for students from developing countries who are willing to contribute to the development of their home countries by studying and polishing their skills in UK universities. The scholarship, offered by the UK universities and funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, covered my outbound ticket fare, visa fee, my tuition fees, and provided a monthly stipend to support living expenses. This scholarship provides the opportunity to students and professionals to pursue their dream of studying in the UK. This award made me capable of becoming a change maker without having financial barriers.

Educational Background

I got my MA (equivalent to graduation) in International Relations from the University of Karachi, Pakistan, with first division, securing a 3.0 CGPA. During my master's, I wrote various articles on national and international issues. Being a board member of the IR department, I held seminars, conferences, and attended various events. Moreover, I did internships at different organizations to hone my skills along with my studies. This educational and professional experience made me realize the need to work for the development of society; therefore, I found it best to get an education in the UK.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship and the University of Portsmouth?

After the completion of my MA (equivalent to graduation) degree in Pakistan, I decided to apply for the Master's program at UK universities. I started to search for scholarships and universities offering an MA in International Relations. As soon as I found the CSC scholarship, I started to work on the application process. I got my educational documents attested by local authorities and attempted English language tests with good scores. I ensured to meet all the requirements of the application and scholarship. I focused on writing and refining my personal statement, application content, and securing references.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

One thing I would do differently and suggest is for everyone to believe in their own instinct rather than listen to others. Although opinions are valuable but sometimes they overshadow your own ideas. I would avoid taking so many opinions from others while writing my application essays. If you want feedback on your essays, you can ask two or three alumni who pursued a similar degree, and you can make changes to your essays accordingly. But again, believe in your own voice first.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice for those looking to apply for a similar scholarship is to believe in yourself and apply even if you are doubtful about getting it. Just put your efforts, time, and dedication. Your job is to work hard and leave the rest to GOD. The Internet is an excellent source of information. You can find anything with just one click. Spend ample time in researching scholarships, preparing your application, and refining your essays. Do not get disappointed if you cannot make it on your first attempt. Keep trying and applying, and you will improve gradually.
