The Journey

My name is Amit Srivastava, and I am originally from India. I am currently working as an Associate Scientist at the Centre Algatech, Institute of Microbiology (Czech Academy of Sciences), where I lead research in the Synthetic Biology of cyanobacteria for biotechnological applications. It is a role I truly enjoy, as it brings together my passion for science, innovation, and problem-solving. Looking back, my journey started with a simple but strong desire to contribute meaningfully to science in a way that also benefits society.

This passion led me to pursue higher education in molecular biology and biotechnology, fields that offered both academic depth and real-world impact. My curiosity about global scientific collaboration, along with a desire to challenge myself in a new academic culture, drew me to Germany. I was incredibly honored to receive the DAAD Sandwich Model Scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This unique program gave me the opportunity to carry out a substantial part of my doctoral research at the Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen, Germany, while staying closely connected to my home lab in India. The scholarship supported 24 months of research (October 2013 – September 2015), along with a four-month German language course at the Goethe-Institut, Mannheim.

Beyond financial support, the scholarship provided crucial resources like language training and comprehensive health insurance, which helped ease my transition into a new country and culture. It truly made my international research experience possible. Before applying, I had completed my undergraduate and postgraduate studies in India, consistently performing well in my classes. My academic foundation in molecular biology and biotechnology shaped my analytical thinking and research skills, laying the groundwork for the advanced work I later pursued in Germany.

How Did I Prepare to Apply to Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen?

The first step was doing a lot of homework. I began by exploring universities and programs in Germany that aligned with my research goals. I focused on institutions with strong research output, active international collaborations, and a reputation for supporting global students. The DAAD website was incredibly helpful, offering a clear overview of available programs, funding opportunities, and application timelines. I had to prepare a comprehensive research proposal, and once it was shortlisted, I went through an interview process. To gain real-world insights, I also reached out to alumni and current students via LinkedIn and university forums, which helped me better understand both the academic environment and everyday life in Germany. Although I was exempt from submitting a formal English language test, I strongly recommend others complete one like the GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS. Not only for meeting requirements, but to ensure effective communication in research discussions and academic settings. I also brushed up on academic readiness using online resources and sample tests, which helped me feel confident and well-prepared.

How Did I Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?

Applying for the DAAD scholarship was not something I took lightly, it required careful planning and a lot of reflection. I spent considerable time writing and fine-tuning my statement of purpose, aiming to be clear and honest about my background, research interests, motivation for studying in Germany, and how this opportunity aligned with my long-term goals. I also made sure my application reflected the core values of DAAD: academic excellence, intercultural exchange, and a commitment to contributing to society. I secured strong letters of recommendation from professors who had closely followed my academic journey and could confidently speak to my potential. Every document I submitted was reviewed multiple times, and accuracy and professionalism really matter.

What Made My Application Stand Out?

Looking back, I believe a few key elements helped my application stand out:

  • A well-defined research plan with real-world relevance
  • Thoughtful and personalized recommendation letters
  • A solid academic record backed by practical experience
  • And above all, a genuine passion for scientific collaboration and cultural exchange

I wasn’t just applying for funding; I was applying to be part of a broader academic mission. I think that sincerity came through in my application.

What Would I Do Differently If I Could Start Over?

If I could go back, I would start even earlier. An early start would have given me more time to:

  • Connect with potential supervisors
  • Further refine my research proposal
  • Improve my German language skills
  • Explore additional funding or scholarship opportunities

I would also recommend practicing mock interviews. They can help you clarify your thoughts and confidently articulate your goals.

My Advice to Future Applicants

  1. Start Early – Don’t wait. Give yourself time to think, research, and polish your application.
  2. Tailor Your Documents – Avoid generic content. Align your materials with the specific scholarship values and expectations.
  3. Invest in Your Statement of Purpose – It’s your story. Be honest, be clear, and connect it directly to your goals.
  4. Understand the System – Familiarize yourself with how the German academic and visa systems work.
  5. Ask for Help – Reach out to mentors, alumni, or advisors. Most people are happy to offer guidance if you just ask.

Receiving the DAAD scholarship was more than a professional milestone, it was a turning point in my life. It gave me the opportunity to grow not just as a researcher, but as a global citizen. I had the privilege of working with brilliant minds, experiencing a new culture, and building lifelong collaborations. If you are thinking about applying for it. With preparation, passion, and a clear vision, it’s absolutely within your reach.
