The Journey

My name is Alejandrina, and I’m from Bolivia. I’ve always been passionate about technology and innovation, which led me to pursue a degree in Electronic Engineering and later, Computer Science. My academic path has taken me from Seoul, South Korea, to Rochester, New York, experiences that have deeply shaped my professional and educational goals.

Korean Government Scholarship Program and Fulbright Scholarship Details

I was fortunate to receive the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), a fully funded scholarship managed by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under South Korea’s Ministry of Education. It covered my Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering at Hanyang University in Seoul, from February 2013 to February 2018.

Later, I received a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue my Master’s in Computer Science in the United States, at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, from 2019 to 2022. Both scholarships provided full funding, including tuition, living expenses, and health insurance.

Educational Background

Before KGSP, I completed my high school education in Bolivia with a strong focus on math and science. I graduated with top grades, which helped strengthen my application. During my undergraduate studies in Korea, I built a strong foundation in programming, digital systems, and research methodologies, all of which prepared me well for graduate-level studies in Computer Science later on.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Hanyang University and Rochester Institute of Technology?

For KGSP, I spent months researching South Korean universities and programs related to engineering. I reviewed each university’s course offerings, faculty profiles, and research opportunities. I also drafted multiple versions of my statement of purpose, focusing on how studying in Korea aligned with my career goals.

For Fulbright, I took more time reflecting on my academic journey and future objectives. I worked a lot on my Statement of Purpose, emphasizing the link between technology, education, and global collaboration.

How Did You Find Information About the KGSP and Fulbright Scholarships and Institutions?

I found out about KGSP through the information that the Korean Embassy provided to the Escuela de Gestión Pública Plurinacional in Bolivia, which posts official announcements every year. For Fulbright, I learned about it from alumni and through the U.S. Embassy’s EducationUSA website. I also joined online forums and Facebook groups where applicants shared advice and deadlines.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes! I took the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) for the KGSP language requirement, but it was in Korea since the scholarship also pays for a year to learn the Korean Language. Later, I took the TOEFL for my Fulbright application. I prepared mostly through self-study, I used online mock exams, practiced daily, and tried to simulate test conditions at home. For TOEFL, I really only focused on practicing writing timed essays.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the KGSP and Fulbright Scholarship?

I treated the application process like a long-term project. I started early, collected recommendation letters well in advance, and made sure every part of my application told a consistent story about my curiosity for technology, academic discipline, and international mindset. For both scholarships, I made sure to proofread every essay and confirm that my motivations were clearly expressed.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe it was my clear academic direction and genuine curiosity. I didn’t just write about wanting to “study abroad,”  I explained how each program would help me contribute to real technological progress in my country. I also demonstrated adaptability, as both scholarships value candidates who are open-minded and ready to thrive in multicultural environments.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could do it again, I would start preparing even earlier, especially gathering recommendation letters and polishing essays. I’d also reach out to more alumni for insights into life at the universities I was applying to. Talking to people who’ve already been through the process makes a huge difference.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early, stay organized, and believe that your background, no matter where you come from, has value. Don’t underestimate the importance of your essays: that’s where your motivation, vision, and personality shine. Finally, remember that scholarships like KGSP and Fulbright look for people who can grow, adapt, and give back. If you show authenticity and purpose, you’ll stand out.
