Hello, my name is Afra Rafilah Khansa, and I am from Indonesia. I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Media Communication at Sun Moon University, South Korea. My passion for Korean culture, particularly its media and entertainment industry, inspired me to study abroad. I chose Media Communication because I am deeply concerned about the quality and responsibility of the media in my country. I want to become a professional who can create content that educates and inspires, and I believe studying abroad will give me the knowledge and perspective to contribute meaningfully to Indonesia’s media industry.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I received the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships provided by the Korean government to international students. The program is designed to promote international exchange and nurture future global leaders. GKS is fully funded and covers tuition fees, monthly living allowance, round-trip airfare, and a year of intensive Korean language training before beginning the degree program. Beyond the financial and academic support, being a GKS scholar also connects me to a diverse international network of students, allowing me to learn from different cultures and broaden my global perspective.
Educational Background
I graduated from Husnul Khotimah Islamic Boarding School in Indonesia. During my studies, I was actively involved in student organizations in the field of media and journalism. As a staff member of the Media & Journalism division, I managed and created school publications, including bulletins and wall magazines, enhancing skills in writing, editing, teamwork, and project management. This experience shaped my interest in media and prepared me to pursue a degree in Media Communication.

I carefully researched universities that offered strong Media Communication programs and looked into their academic reputation, facilities, and international student support. I prepared my application by highlighting both my academic

I found information mainly through online research and official websites at studyinkorea.com. I also watched YouTube channels of Indonesian GKS students, which gave me valuable insights into both the scholarship process and student life.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the GKS Scholarship?
I focused on crafting a strong personal statement that reflected my passion, academic background, and future aspirations. I highlighted my involvement in journalism, competitions, and writing activities, as well as my long-term goal of producing meaningful media content that promotes cross-cultural understanding between Indonesia and South Korea.
How is (was) Your Experience at Sun Moon University?
Studying at Sun Moon University has been a very enriching experience. The program is academically rigorous, and the environment is culturally diverse. I have also been able to broaden my horizons by learning the Korean language and adapting to a new academic culture.
How Do You Rate Sun Moon University Academically and Why?
I would rate it highly because of its strong Media Communication program, excellent professors, and supportive environment for international students.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my strong personal statement, combined with my consistent involvement in journalism, competitions, and freelance writing, made my application stand out. These experiences showcased not only my academic abilities but also my adaptability and passion for media.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would start preparing earlier, especially in terms of learning the Korean language. A stronger foundation before arriving would have made the adjustment smoother.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice is to be authentic in your application. Clearly express your passion, experiences, and goals. Don’t just list achievements, show how they shaped you. Also, prepare a strong personal statement and seek guidance from mentors or alumni. Lastly, stay persistent and believe in your potential, because scholarships like GKS not only look for strong academics but also for students with vision and dedication
