The Journey
I am Abraham Baba ZHIRI, a mathematics researcher and educator from Sommazhiko village in Niger State, Nigeria. My research focuses on applied mathematics with publications in wildfire fluid dynamics, biomathematics, and infectious disease modelling. I am married to Mrs. Gladys Kashi-Tsado ZHIRI. Currently, I am pursuing an MPhil in Scientific Computing at the University of Cambridge, where I am developing advanced computational skills to address complex problems in theoretical physics and its applications. Prior to Cambridge, I earned a Master of Technology (MTech) in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Pure Mathematics. My purpose in studying at Cambridge is to expand my knowledge base, gain exposure to innovative methodologies for tackling emerging global challenges, and establish academic connections for future collaborations.
Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Scholarship Details
I am currently a recipient of the prestigious fully funded Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at the University of Cambridge. During the 2024/2025 admissions cycle, I secured two offers from Cambridge: an MPhil program and a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) pathway combining an MPhil with a PhD. I was fortunate to receive full funding for the standalone MPhil program, enabling my current studies at Cambridge, though funding for the CDT option was not secured. Previously, I was awarded a fully funded PhD scholarship at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad, Pakistan, in Mathematics, which included a Graduate Teaching Assistant position accompanied by a monthly stipend. I declined this opportunity in 2023 in favour of an Assistant Lecturer position at the Federal University of Technology in Minna, Nigeria, and to serve the institute after receiving my first Master’s degree training by the same university. In 2018, I was selected for the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMs) scholarship, a fully funded program of approximately one year's duration in Mathematical Science. Unfortunately, due to the short notice of just 2-3 days of the award, I was unable to accept this opportunity, as there was insufficient time for preparation.
Educational Background
I received my Master of Technology (MTech) in Applied Mathematics from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, in 2021, graduating as the overall best student with a perfect CGPA of 5.00/5.00. This achievement was recognized as exceptional within both the department and the university. For my undergraduate studies, I earned a Bachelor's degree from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, where I also graduated as the best student in the Mathematics Department with a CGPA of 4.60/5.00. This accomplishment was recognized through numerous awards from the department and various professional associations.
Prior to my university education, I completed a three-year program at the Federal College of Education, Kontagora (now Federal University of Education, Kontagora), Nigeria. There, I distinguished myself as the top student in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, the Faculty of Science, and the entire college for my graduation year (2010). Moreover, I maintained the highest academic record at the institution for a decade (2005-2015) with an exceptional CGPA of 4.93/5.00, earning multiple awards in recognition of this achievement.
My consistent academic excellence from college onward provided me with a strong foundation to pursue advanced studies in either mathematics or computer science. While I initially focused solely on mathematics during my undergraduate and first master's programs, my current MPhil at Cambridge effectively combines both mathematics and computing disciplines.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Institutions?
Preparing to apply for institutions of higher learning, especially after completing a first degree, begins with a clear sense of purpose and passion. I believe that pursuing further studies should be driven by genuine interest and a deep desire for growth. As the saying goes, “You always make time for what you’re passionate about.” For me, the passion to learn, unlearn, and relearn has always been a guiding force. With this mindset, I began early to prepare myself mentally and practically to submit strong and competitive applications. This preparation went beyond mere intention—it involved deliberate actions geared towards self-development. I engaged in volunteer work, attended seminars and conferences, participated in both group and independent research, and published academic articles. Additionally, I got involved in community service, offering support to underrepresented individuals and helping them achieve their goals. These experiences not only enriched my profile but also boosted my confidence in applying to prestigious institutions and competing for funding opportunities. Beyond maintaining excellent academic results and a strong CGPA, these engagements played a crucial role in making my applications well-rounded and compelling.
From my undergraduate days, I actively researched the requirements for studying abroad and quickly discovered that standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, or GMAT are often essential components of the application process. Being naturally inclined toward logic and analytical reasoning as a Mathematician, I found it relatively easy to engage with and study quantitative-based materials and test modules. To prepare, I frequently sourced practice questions online and dedicated time to consistently work through them. This approach significantly strengthened my readiness and built my confidence for any of the required tests. Although I did not end up taking most of the standardized tests officially, I successfully completed an English Language Proficiency examination administered by the University of Cambridge Language Testing Centre before finalizing my admission. Thanks to my earlier preparations and consistent practice, I was able to pass the English language test in one sitting, which contributed to securing my place at Cambridge.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship?
Preparing for scholarship applications was quite similar to how I approached applying to institutions for admission, with only a few key differences. One of the most important steps in applying for a scholarship is understanding the specific details and requirements of the opportunity. Knowing what a scholarship entails helps tailor your essays and other application materials to align effectively with the funders' expectations. In my case, I always began with thorough background research to determine whether a particular scholarship was a good fit for me. This included reviewing the eligibility criteria, goals of the funding body, and any specific conditions attached to the award. Doing this helped me assess whether I was qualified and whether the scholarship aligned with my academic and personal aspirations. This focused approach enabled me to prepare more intentional and compelling scholarship applications, increasing my chances of success.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out due to a combination of several impactful factors. First, my strong academic record, including excellent CGPAs, provided a solid foundation. In addition, my active involvement in research significantly enhanced my profile—I have co-authored publications with scholars from various countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Turkey, and, of course, Nigeria, extending beyond my home university. Moreover, I’ve presented my work at conferences, attended academic seminars, and engaged in collaborative research projects, all of which have broadened my perspective and strengthened my academic network. Beyond academics, my commitment to community service also played a key role. I’ve volunteered my time to teach underserved students and even offered scholarships, within my capacity, to support those with limited opportunities. Altogether, I believe this blend of academic excellence, global research collaboration, volunteerism, and community impact helped my application stand out in a highly competitive selection process.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would dream even bigger and broaden my vision beyond my initial expectations. I would increase my involvement in volunteer activities, aiming to make a greater positive impact on the people around me. Creating joy and adding value to other people’s lives is something I now recognize as even more meaningful and fulfilling. In addition, I would seek to expand my research collaborations further, connecting with more scholars across diverse fields and regions. This kind of academic networking not only enhances one's profile but also fosters rich, multidisciplinary perspectives. Moreover, I would invest more time in acquiring advanced skills through platforms like Coursera and other online learning resources, especially in areas like Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and programming. Developing such in-demand skills would not only boost my academic and professional profile but also significantly increase my chances of securing scholarships and gaining admission to top-tier institutions.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice is to stay focused, be determined, and have a clear vision. If you don’t already have one, take the time to create a vision for your academic and personal growth. Once that vision is in place, write it down, study it, understand it deeply, and take consistent, deliberate actions toward making it a reality. Success becomes more attainable when you are intentional and proactive about your goals. To win a scholarship, you must be a doer—someone who takes action. It is action-takers, not just talkers, who make an impact and stand out. Hard work, consistency, and self-discipline are key. Additionally, seek out mentorship and guidance. Connect with those who have successfully secured similar scholarships. Learn from their experiences, ask questions, and apply the insights you gain. This, not only saves you time but also gives you a clearer pathway to success. In summary: dream big, work hard, stay consistent, and never hesitate to learn from those who’ve gone ahead of you.
