My name is Abdulafeez Olaitan, and I am a doctoral student in physics at the University of Idaho, United States. I am originally from Nigeria, where I earned my bachelor's degree in Applied Physics at the University of Lagos. I graduated with the highest honors and was recognized as the best graduating student in my department.

Educational Background

To prepare for graduate school, I completed a research internship at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. At the Chen Lab, I employed computational simulations to investigate the dynamic reshaping of nanodroplets under electron beam radiation. This work made me aware of important knowledge gaps, like how fluid behavior changes when moving from isolated nanoscale droplets to complex microfluidic and optofluidic environments, and how these dynamics can be harnessed to probe and control biological systems. Addressing these challenges motivated my desire to join Professor Vasdekis’ lab, where his work in bioimaging offers an ideal environment to extend my research.

Complementing this experience, I graduated with a BSc GPA of 4.78 out of 5 and engaged in graduate-level materials in quantum physics, electrodynamics, solid state physics, and statistical physics.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Idaho?

Securing my PhD funding required a strategic alignment of my academic record with the specific research strengths of the institutions I targeted. My preparation centered on demonstrating that my undergraduate background was a direct pipeline into advanced research in specialized areas of physics. The most critical step was identifying programs where my interest in bioimaging overlapped with active lab projects. I focused on the University of Idaho because of its strong emphasis on experimental biophysics, courtesy of Professor Vasdeskis’ lab.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the University of Idaho PhD Funding Package?

I consulted different target universities' websites for information on how to apply. Some require application fees, some don’t, some offer application fee waivers. Then I highlighted programs that aligned with my interests, reviewed their funding, GPA requirements, and application deadlines. I prepared my essay statements, academic resume, BSc certificate, and reached out to my undergrad professors for recommendation letters. Crucially, I researched professors whose work resonated with my own and sent targeted cold emails to these potential advisors. While not mandatory, this step was invaluable for introducing myself, sharing my research ideas, and establishing a relationship before formally submitting my application. I didn't take any standardized tests like SAT/ACT/TOEFL/IELTS/GRE/GMAT since they weren't required for my application.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of my clearly aligned research interests. I focused on how the program fits into my long-term goals and also highlighted unique experiences, such as leadership roles and problem-solving abilities, which demonstrated my readiness for research.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would remind myself not to let self-doubt slow me down. As someone coming from Nigeria and aiming for a highly competitive doctoral program in physics in the United States, there were moments when I questioned whether I belonged in these spaces. What I know now is that my background and work ethic were always enough. I would encourage my younger self to apply boldly and trust the preparation.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

The most critical advice I can give is to build a portfolio that tells a story. Spend a lot of time on your essay statements to convey a narrative that connects your past academic achievements directly to future research goals. Additionally, you should target schools not only for prestige, but also where your interests meet the department’s strengths.
