Seattle is a beautiful city famous for its music and food scenes. Because of this, it attracts many tourists and students alike. Choosing to study medicine in Seattle can leave very few options, in terms of providers. However, what the city lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. The University of Washington has a unique medical school that attracts many students from across the globe. The school can offer unique experiences that few others, in the U.S., can.

University of Washington

The University of Washington School of Medicine was founded in 1946 and has been continuously recognized for advancing medical knowledge through scientific research. It is also consistently recognized as one of the nation’s top schools for training physicians, as well as being highly ranked in the U.S. for primary care education. Scientists at UW Medicine strongly focus on exploring the different aspects of health and diseases. This includes the molecular mechanisms of gene action and global illnesses.

UW Medicine is the only five-state medical school in the country and is part of the WWAMI collaborative program. This means that UW students from Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho are able to connect their education with their respective home states. Students from out-of-state can complete their foundation’s phase of the curriculum in small learning groups in their states. Students from Washington can complete this in Seattle or Spokane. The cross-regional nature of this school allows students to experience a wider range of medical education. They have access to rural and urban clinics, including private practices, community health care centers, community hospitals, and tertiary care hospitals. In fact, many of the graduates go on to serve areas of need in rural towns, inner cities, and even developing countries.

Study Programs at UW School of Medicine

Offering a plethora of medical degree programs, UW also offers the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). This program is designed for highly qualified candidates who want to complete an M.D. and Ph.D. and then continue to pursue careers in medical research. It is an extremely difficult and equally rewarding experience that the student must be fully committed to.

The programs at this medical school also expose students to the true lifestyle of a physician in rural communities and what it means to serve these communities. This type of hands-on experience gives the students an unparalleled look into the reality of the world they want to enter.

The University of Washington is the only medical school provider in Seattle, and because of this, the city does not accept international students unless they hold a permanent residency. UW Medicine only accepts in-state and WWAMI residents.
