"I’d probably suggest applying to top universities in Seoul, but I’d be lying if I said that’s the only way to go. Studying at my university, which was located outside of Seoul, gave me a whole new perspective on Korea. It also came with its own advantages—like much cheaper living costs, especially for accommodation."

Sun Moon University FAQ

Are there any scholarships at Sun Moon University that are for online courses?

Most Sun Moon University scholarships (including tuition deductions tied to TOPIK/English scores and GPA-based scholarships for enrolled students) are designed around being an enrolled student in a regular degree program.

Are courses taught at Sun Moon University in English or in Korean?

Sun Moon University offers both English-taught and Korean-taught options, depending on the program/track.

For example, Sun Moon’s international-student-focused Division of Interdisciplinary Studies (formerly connected to the School of Global Leaders) explicitly offers two tracks, including an English Track (International Business and Trade) that is “delivered entirely in English,” and Korean-track options (like Korean Language and Culture).

Is there an age limit to get scholarships at Sun Moon University?

For Sun Moon University’s internal tuition scholarships (like tuition deductions based on language scores and GPA-based scholarships for enrolled students), the criteria are typically academic/language-based rather than age-based.

However, many external scholarships do have age limits. For example, the Korean government’s Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) has an age rule (and it differs by program level/year), so you should always check the latest year’s guideline before applying.

As a real example of the external-scholarship route, both Afra Rafilah Khansa and Chintia Putri Hanaan studied at Sun Moon University through GKS (fully funded), which comes with its own eligibility requirements.

For which subjects does Sun Moon University offer scholarships for?

Generally, Sun Moon University scholarships are not limited to one subject area; they are commonly awarded based on eligibility type (international status), language proficiency (TOPIK/English test), and/or academic performance (GPA).

For which nationalities does Sun Moon University offer scholarships for?

Sun Moon’s internal “foreigner” scholarship categories are typically open broadly to international applicants who meet the stated conditions (for example, language score criteria), rather than being restricted to a small list of passports.

External scholarships can be nationality-limited. For example, GKS eligibility depends on nationality rules and country quotas in the given year.

Recipient examples at Sun Moon include Indonesians like Afra Rafilah Khansa and Chintia Putri Hanaan, and Malaysians like Eizat Zakbah, who received GKS.

Is having a language proficiency test necessary (IELTS, TOEFL, TOPIK, etc.) for Sun Moon University? If not, is it necessary for scholarships and can I get scholarships with it?

It depends on your track. For an English-taught track, Sun Moon lists accepted English tests (like TOEFL/IELTS/TOEIC or equivalents) to prove you can study in English; for Korean-track study, TOPIK and/or a university Korean test route is commonly used.

For scholarships, language tests can directly unlock tuition deductions. Sun Moon’s scholarship tables include tuition reductions tied to TOPIK levels (and also an “applied using English qualifications” category), meaning that strong TOPIK/English scores can help you receive scholarships.

Recipients often highlight tests as “leverage”: Eizat Zakbah said, “I took the IELTS test, which definitely added a bonus point,” and Chintia Putri Hanaan shared, “I also submitted the Score Report of a ‘TOEIC IBT from Home’ exam.”

Is there a minimum grade for acceptance at Sun Moon University?

Sun Moon University admissions decisions are usually holistic (program-by-program), so there isn’t always a single published GPA cutoff that applies to every applicant and department.

That said, scholarships and external programs often do have clear minimum academic requirements. For example, GKS lists a minimum academic performance requirement (often presented as 80%+ GPA equivalency in the most recent program), and Sun Moon’s enrolled-student scholarships are explicitly GPA-tiered.

Recipient GPAs can help you benchmark: Eizat Zakbah wrote that he “graduated with a CGPA of 3.49/4.00,” and Chintia Putri Hanaan reported “GPA of 3.71 out of 4.0 scale” (and later “GPA of 3.81 out of 4.0 scale, Cum Laude”).

What is a good academic background to get a scholarship at Sun Moon University?

A strong GPA, a clear match between your background and your chosen program, and strong writing (study plan/personal statement) are common patterns, plus language scores (TOPIK/IELTS/TOEFL) if you’re aiming for tuition deductions or competitive external scholarships.

Eizat Zakbah described practical preparation: “I focused on writing my personal statement, securing recommendation letters, and taking the IELTS test.”

Chintia Putri Hanaan emphasized storytelling and fit: “I believe essays are the most important part of the scholarship application,” especially to explain the bridge between your past and future plans.

And Afra Rafilah Khansa highlighted depth and consistency: “I believe my strong personal statement… made my application stand out,” backed by sustained media/journalism involvement.

What documents do I need to apply for Sun Moon University?

Exact requirements vary by level (language institute vs. undergraduate vs. graduate) and by scholarship track, but commonly requested documents include your application form, proof of graduation, transcripts, passport copy, and financial documents if a visa is needed.

For the Sun Moon Korean Language Institute (a common stepping stone toward degree study), the admissions page lists items like an application form, graduation certificate, transcript, bank balance certificate, passport copy, photo upload, and (when relevant) a family-relationship certificate; it also notes that additional documents may be requested during review.

Scholarship applicants often add scholarship-specific documents: Eizat Zakbah said he reviewed “all the application forms and required documents” early and prepared recommendations and IELTS; Chintia Putri Hanaan described writing her essay for months to clearly connect her background to her plan.
