JAIST scholarships generally apply to JAIST degree study and research areas, so they mainly support STEM plus interdisciplinary fields. JAIST’s core degree areas include Knowledge Science, Information Science, and Materials Science (and related transdisciplinary areas).
Engineering/STEM: Strong coverage in computing, AI, digital infrastructure, materials, nanomaterials/devices, and related advanced engineering research areas.
Business & humanities: JAIST’s Knowledge Science explicitly includes topics like business management and system science; research areas also include knowledge management and “Creative Society Design”-type themes, so applicants interested in management/innovation/policy intersections often fit here.
Medicine: JAIST is not a medical school (no MD program). However, JAIST does have bioscience/biotechnology/biomedical engineering-related research areas, which can suit “biomedical engineering” or health-tech applicants. For clinical medicine pathways, you’d typically need a medical faculty elsewhere; and under MEXT rules, even students studying medicine-related fields cannot do clinical training without the appropriate Japanese license.
