1. Tennessee State University

Kicking off our list of cheapest universities in Nashville is Tennessee State University, also known as Tenn State or TSU. The university was established in 1912 and is originally a historically black Land-grant university. The public school is currently the largest state-funded historically black university in the state of Tennessee. As of 2014, the university is home to over 9,000 students. The university offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes. The 38 bachelor’s programmes include Arts and Sciences, History, and Nursing and 35 more, all of which offer different minors and concentrations. Students can have their pick out of the 24 different master’s degrees and seven doctoral degrees after completing their bachelor’s degree. All of these academic programmes are spread out across eight different colleges, including the College of Engineering, the College of Public Service, and the College of Liberal Arts. The university houses a lot of different activities and opportunities for their students to get more involved in campus life and contribute to their community.

2. American Baptist College

Next on our list of cheap universities in Nashville is the American Baptist College, which is a private and African American Baptist College and was founded in 1924 by the National Baptist Convention. This African American Christian denomination is the largest of its kind in the United States. The university is still affiliated with the denomination today. The college emphasizes the liberal arts in its academic programmes. The American Baptist College houses various different programmes, which take up to two or four years, depending on the programme that is chosen. The bachelor’s degrees take four years, for example the Bachelor of Arts Degree, Bible and Theology or the Bachelor of Arts in Entrepreneurial Leadership. The Associate degrees take two years, these include the Associate of Arts Degree, General Studies, and the Associates of Arts in Music and Arts. These Associate degrees prepare students for a transfer to a bachelor’s degree or entry-level careers.

3. Welch College

Formerly known as the Free Will Baptist Bible College, Welch College is a private institution that was founded in 1942 by the Free Will Baptist, a denomination that dates back to the 1600s in England. As of 2019, Welch College houses over 400 undergraduate students. This makes Welch College quite a small institution. The college offers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The bachelor’s degrees students can take part in include the Bachelor of Arts and Science, the Bachelor of Music, Teacher Education and Theological Studies programmes. The associate degrees that are offered can last two to three years and prepare students to enrol in a bachelor’s degree of their choice. The master’s degrees that are available for students are Theology and Ministry or Teaching. Welch College’s main objective is to make sure every student can enjoy college and enrol in a programme of their choice for them to become successful in today’s challenging career world. To accomplish this, Welch College offers financial aid to its students.

4. Daymar College Nashville

Founded in 1963, Daymar College in Nashville is a for-profit college that was formerly known as Owensboro Business College until 2001. Next to the Tennessee campus, the college has another two campuses in Ohio and Kentucky. Students who live too far away from any of the campuses or prefer to stay at home to study can also opt to follow their academic programmes online at Daymar College. Students have a variety of options to choose from within the programmes at Daymar College. These programmes are divided into different areas. These include Business, Technology and Design, Health Care, Health and Wellness, and Criminal Justice. In 2003, this cheap university in Nashville expanded its territory to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where it opened a second branch campus in the state.

5. Fisk University

We have come to the last university on our list, Fisk University. Fisk University is, just like Tennessee State University, a private historically black university. The institution was established in 1866 by leaders of the northern American Missionary Association, six months after the end of the American Civil War. Fisk University houses a vibrant campus life, with over 50 students groups and organizations, student meeting rooms and a University Choir. Students can live on campus in one of the so-called “living learning centres (LLC)”. Students are housed based on their year of study and gender. Programmes at Fisk University are housed in different departments, being the School of Humanities and Behavioural Social Sciences that include History and Political Science and Arts and Languages, and the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Business with Life and Physical Sciences and Business Administration. Notable alumni from Fisk University include Mathew Nobles, father, and former manager of Beyoncé, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner David Levering Lewis and senator Theo Mitchell.
