Established in 1921, the inauguration of the university was attended by Cardinal Achille Ratti, the archbishop of Milan who later became Pope Pius XI.

The university is among the best engineering universities in Italy and the world and the top 10 universities offering architecture, design, and civil and structural engineering courses. Established in 1924, the university was the product of the merger of the Accademia Scientifico-Letteraria/Scientific-Literary Academy and the Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento/Clinical Specialisation Institutes. Both of these institutions have already made their mark in the scientific, humanistic, and medical fields.
