Studying medicine in Serbia can be very rewarding at one of its top universities. A major place to study is the capital city, Belgrade, where many students attend the public University of Belgrade. Student life in Belgrade offers a wide range of opportunities for studying, socializing, and exploring the city. Compared with many Western European capitals, living costs in Belgrade are generally lower, although costs vary by lifestyle and location. Belgrade is also well connected to other European destinations by air, including routes to cities such as Paris, Prague, and Berlin. In this article, we will be looking at some of the top medical schools in Serbia.

How much does medical school cost in Serbia?

At public universities in Serbia, students may study as budget-financed students, whose tuition is covered by state funding, or as self-financed students, who pay tuition. International students usually pay tuition fees set by the individual faculty and program. There are also private universities where fees can vary widely.

At the University of Belgrade Faculty of Medicine, the English-language MD program currently costs €8,000 per academic year, plus a €140 application fee.

For comparison, the University of Kragujevac Faculty of Medical Sciences listed the English-taught Integrated Academic Studies of Medicine tuition for foreign citizens at €6,000 for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Best Medical Schools in Serbia

1. University of Belgrade Faculty of Medicine

In the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, you can study medicine at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Medicine, part of one of the country’s highest-ranked public universities. The idea of establishing a medical faculty in Belgrade was discussed as early as December 1879, and the School of Medicine officially opened on December 9, 1920.

There is the option to study medicine in Serbian or English at this university. The English-language MD program follows a six-year structure, with courses listed from the first through sixth year, and leads to medical training comparable in structure to the Serbian-language program.

The MD program is competitive. Applicants must submit high school transcripts and a diploma, proof of English-language competence unless exempt, and other required documents. Required high school coursework includes Biology with lab, General Chemistry with lab, and Organic Chemistry with lab. After document review, applicants take an entrance exam in Biology and Chemistry and attend a personal interview. The admission score is based on the entrance exam, interview, and cumulative high school GPA.

2. University of Kragujevac Faculty of Medical Sciences

Another option for studying medicine in Serbia is the University of Kragujevac Faculty of Medical Sciences. Its English-taught Integrated Academic Studies of Medicine program lasts 12 semesters, or six academic years, and totals 360 ECTS credits. The curriculum includes mandatory and elective courses, clinical practice, and final research and defense work.

Students complete professional practice in clinical teaching bases during the fourth, fifth, and sixth years in areas such as internal medicine, infectious diseases, pediatrics, surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, emergency medical conditions, and geriatrics. The program is available in English, while foreign citizens may also enroll in Serbian-language studies if they meet the same conditions as domestic students and know the language of instruction.

The University of Kragujevac participates in Erasmus+ mobility, including opportunities for student mobility for studies and traineeships. Applicants to the English-taught medicine program should expect an entrance process that includes Biology and Chemistry tests, an interview, proof of appropriate secondary education, a health certificate, and proof of English at least at B2 level or previous education completed in English.

Students should also note that Serbia has additional English-taught medical options, including the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Niš. Both list six-year medicine programs in English on their official admissions pages.
