1. United States of America

The USA is a great place to study abroad, especially when it comes to biochemistry. International students can choose from an array of world-class universities, including MIT, Harvard, and others. Because of this high-quality education and strong research environment, the USA is one of the best countries to study biochemistry abroad.

At MIT, students interested in biochemistry can pursue the interdisciplinary Chemistry and Biology major. At Caltech, students can study biochemistry through the graduate Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics option.

What’s excellent about enrolling in the USA is that students can learn from leading researchers. Many American universities have Nobel laureates among their faculty and alumni. Examples in chemistry and biochemistry-related fields include Frances Arnold at Caltech, Jennifer Doudna at UC Berkeley, and George P. Smith at the University of Missouri.

2. United Kingdom

When it comes to biochemistry and other biological sciences, the UK remains one of the best countries to study biochemistry. Here, international students can get a world-class biochemistry degree from the UK’s top-ranked universities.

At the top of the list is Oxford, which houses one of the largest Biochemistry departments in Europe. It offers a four-year Biochemistry (Molecular and Cellular) course that leads to an MBiochem degree. Lessons are taught through lectures, tutorials, and practicals, and the fourth year is spent mainly on an extended research project.

The UK also offers several strong biochemistry programs beyond Oxford, including options at Birmingham and UCL.

3. Japan

Japan, a technologically advanced country, is a strong destination for science education. As such, it’s a promising destination for students who want to major in biochemistry.

In the land of the rising sun, international students have a broad list of university choices. Topping the list are prominent institutions, including the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Tohoku University.

The University of Tokyo, for one, traces its Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry to 1958, when it became the first university department in Japan specializing in molecular biology. Its biochemistry curriculum emphasizes a foundation in biology, physics, and chemistry, as well as laboratory-based learning.

With its strong research culture and laboratories, Japan remains a strong destination for students who want a research-driven biochemistry education. The country’s record in chemistry was strengthened again when Susumu Kitagawa shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

4. China

China, one of today’s major global powers, has proven itself as a strong destination for education. This is especially true in the sciences, including biochemistry. Many Chinese institutions are recognized among the world’s leading universities in life sciences, including Peking University and Tsinghua University.

At Tsinghua, undergraduate life science study is under the School of Life Sciences. The undergraduate program is not simply an all-English biochemistry degree; Tsinghua notes that several key life-science courses, including biochemistry, are taught in English, while other courses may be bilingual or Chinese-taught.

The school is supported by an accomplished faculty and an active research environment in modern life sciences.

Best of all, international students often do not have to pay as much to study at Chinese universities as they would in some other major study-abroad destinations. At Tsinghua, for example, tuition for Chinese-English taught Chemistry and Life Science undergraduate programs is listed at RMB 30,000 per year, before other costs.

5. Hong Kong

The special administrative region of Hong Kong may not be large, but it’s big in education. Here, future biochemists may study at many renowned institutions, such as the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology.

At HKU, the Major in Biochemistry is offered through the Bachelor of Science program, and students can declare the major after admission to the BSc. HKU also lists a 6-credit Biochemistry Internship course for eligible students. CUHK offers a B.Sc. in Biochemistry with a curriculum emphasizing current topics in biochemistry and molecular biology. These opportunities and the region’s strong university environment make Hong Kong one of the best places to study biochemistry.

Scholarships in Hong Kong are also available for deserving students. At CUHK, admission scholarships are available to both local and non-local new undergraduate students based on excellent academic or non-academic performance.

6. Germany

Germany is famous for its high-quality and, in many cases, comparatively affordable public higher education system. This is why many students head to Deutschland, especially those who wish to become biochemists.

Germany, after all, is home to several renowned universities. Listed in global university rankings are Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the Technical University of Munich, and Heidelberg University, to name a few.

At LMU, for one, the Chemistry and Biochemistry program combines both scientific areas in a six-semester, 180-ECTS bachelor’s degree. The program’s language of instruction is German.

German higher education can be affordable, but tuition rules vary by state, university, and student status. At LMU’s listed Chemistry and Biochemistry bachelor’s program, the degree is admission-free and taught in German. At TUM, newly enrolling non-EU students generally pay tuition fees, usually €2,000 or €3,000 per semester for bachelor’s programs and €4,000 or €6,000 per semester for master’s programs, plus semester fees. At Heidelberg University, non-EU and non-EEA students generally pay €1,500 per semester for bachelor’s and consecutive master’s programs. Some programs are taught in English, but many biochemistry-related bachelor’s programs require German.

7. Singapore

Singapore, a prominent Southeast Asian country, is another promising country for studying biochemistry. Two of the most popular options for international students include the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University.

At NUS, biochemistry teaching is connected with the Department of Biochemistry in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, while undergraduate Life Sciences students study biochemistry as part of a broader life-sciences curriculum.

Students who want to strengthen their research skills may apply for the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science, which gives undergraduates the opportunity to participate in scientific research projects.

At NTU, students can study Chemistry and Biological Chemistry through a full-time four-year Direct Honors bachelor’s program with training across modern chemistry, including organic and biological chemistry.
