Finland has universities and colleges that offer engineering and technology-related education. Students can compare the country’s universities and colleges, available programs, and scholarship opportunities before pursuing higher education in Finland.

Engineering programs in Finland vary by university, degree level, and field of study. The schools below are selected examples rather than an official ranking. The University of Helsinki is included as a technology-related option, although it does not have a dedicated engineering faculty.

Top Schools Offering Engineering Programs in Finland

1. University of Helsinki

Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki is Finland’s oldest and largest institution of academic education. The university reported 31,871 degree students in 2025 and ranks among the top 1% of universities worldwide.

The University of Helsinki should be considered a technology-related option rather than a conventional engineering school. Its official organizational structure includes 11 faculties but does not list a dedicated engineering faculty. Relevant study paths include the Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Master’s programs in fields such as computer science, data science, and technologies for the sustainable use of renewable resources. The university also offers doctoral programs, including the Doctoral Programme in Science.

Education at the University of Helsinki is research-based, with multidisciplinary study options across its faculties. International applicants should review each program’s current language of instruction, eligibility requirements, and application details before applying.

2. Tampere University

Tampere University was established in 2019 through the merger of the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology. The new foundation-based university became the majority shareholder of Tampere University of Applied Sciences. Tampere University offers education through seven faculties and more than 100 degree programs. Engineering-related education is available through faculties such as the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. English-language Bachelor’s options include Computing and Electrical Engineering and several Science and Engineering study paths.

The university also offers engineering-related Master’s and doctoral programs. Its Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences brings together expertise in natural sciences and major branches of engineering, while the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences includes units in computing sciences and electrical engineering.

3. Aalto University

Aalto University has its main campus in Otaniemi, Espoo. The university began operating in 2010 following the merger of the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Its interdisciplinary structure connects technology with business, science, art, and design.

Aalto University has six schools, including the School of Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering, and School of Science. The School of Engineering focuses on areas such as energy and mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and the built environment. Its official pages also highlight research into critical infrastructure, sustainable solutions, and collaboration with industry and other stakeholders.

In an interview published by Global Scholarships, Muhammad Dayyan Hussain Khan from Pakistan describes studying at Aalto University as an “incredibly enriching” experience. He completed a Master’s in Automation and Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Electrical Power and Energy Engineering. He describes the program as “highly practical and research-driven” and highlights its “strong emphasis on sustainability and future-oriented technologies.”

In the same interview, Khan says that he works in ABB’s Large Motors and Generators division in Helsinki, where his role involves designing and optimizing high-voltage induction motors for global clients. His account illustrates how an international graduate has applied skills developed during his studies to professional work in the energy sector.

4. Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT

Lappeenranta–Lahti University of Technology LUT, commonly known as LUT University, is a public science university that brings together technology, business, and social sciences. The university began operating in 1969 and has more than 50 years of experience in education and research.

LUT University has three faculties: the LUT School of Energy Systems, the LUT School of Engineering Sciences, and LUT Business School. The LUT School of Engineering Sciences covers areas such as separation and process technology, green chemistry, computational engineering, industrial engineering and management, and software engineering. The LUT School of Energy Systems covers areas such as civil and construction engineering, electrical engineering, energy technology, mechanical engineering, and sustainability science.

LUT offers technology programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral levels. Its engineering studies combine natural sciences with practical applications and are designed to address industry needs and current global challenges. Applicants should review the university’s current program pages because the available programs, study formats, and locations vary.

5. University of Oulu

Founded in 1958, the University of Oulu is one of Finland’s largest and most multidisciplinary universities. The university reports 14,800 students across eight faculties and states that it consistently ranks within the top 3% of universities worldwide.

Engineering and technology-related education is available through faculties including the Faculty of Technology and the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The university also has a Faculty of Science. Its engineering-related fields include areas such as civil engineering, chemical process engineering, industrial engineering and management, materials and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, communications engineering, and computer science and engineering.

The University of Oulu offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral study paths in engineering and technology-related fields. It also offers more than 25 international degree programs taught in English, including four programs that lead to both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and a range of two-year Master’s programs.
