How I Secured a Fully Funded Master's at Aalto University, Finland Through the Finland Government Scholarship

Hi everyone! I'm Abdur Rahman, a Pakistani engineer currently living and working in Finland. I completed my Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications from the University of Engineering & Technology, Taxila (UET Taxila) in 2020. I'm honoured to have received the Finland Government Scholarship for my Master's studies at Aalto University in MS CCIS, Communication Engineering.

• 100% tuition fee waiver - €15,000 per year for the full 2-year duration of my Master's program
• €5,000 stipend for the first year of studies

This scholarship was part of Finland's government initiative to attract talented students from around the world and give them access to world-class education. It not only eased my financial burden as an international student but was also one of the biggest motivators for me to move abroad. With this support, I focused entirely on my studies and graduated with honors.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes! After completing my first year with strong academic performance, Aalto's School of Electrical Engineering awarded me the Dean's List Scholarship. Students with a GPA of 4.0 or above who had completed 60 ECTS credits were eligible. The award was approximately €500.

Educational Background

I completed my BSc in Telecommunications from UET Taxila in 2020 with a GPA of 3.67/4.00, earning the silver medal for my graduating class of 2016.

After graduation, I joined Nayatel (a Pakistani ISP) as a Technical Support Engineer - my first professional role in the telecom industry. After 1.5 years, I moved to Huawei as an IP Data Communications Engineer, which broadened my understanding of how telecom operators actually function.

Yes, I took the IELTS exam to meet the English language requirement. I prepared through self-study and online practice tests, using platforms like IELTSonline. I scored a 7.0 band, which comfortably met Aalto's requirement. My time at Aalto University was amazing. The campus is modern and spacious, with labs that students can freely reserve, tech equipment available to borrow, and regular industrial seminars and company visits that bring students closer to the industry.

The teaching approach is refreshingly different - practical, research-oriented, and collaborative. Every course encouraged us to connect theory to real-world applications while working in diverse, multicultural teams.

Student life is equally rich. The biggest highlight of the year is Vappu (Wappu) - a beloved Finnish student celebration on May Day that every student in Finland looks forward to.

Living in Finland also teaches you something beyond academics: how to find joy in the simple things and stay positive even through the harshest winters. My time at Aalto truly shaped me - both as a professional and as a person.

How Do You Rate Aalto University Academically?

I would rate Aalto as one of the best institutions to study at. The curriculum combines theoretical depth with practical, research-driven learning - especially in technology and engineering. The faculty are actively involved in cutting-edge research, and that quality shows in the courses and teaching.

My program was well-structured and up to date with industry needs, particularly in communication, cloud, and networking. Team-based activities across many courses also helped us build real teamwork skills across multicultural settings.

Overall, Aalto's culture of creativity, innovation, and international engagement makes it one of the top-ranked institutions - and it absolutely lives up to its reputation.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Finnish?

All classes at Aalto University were conducted in English. Most Master's programs are specifically designed for international students, so English is the official language of instruction for courses, lectures, assignments, and exams. Not knowing Finnish is not a barrier at all - Aalto has a strong international focus and makes sure every student can fully participate from day one.

Although the Finland Government Scholarship was discontinued from 2025 onwards, the principles for winning any competitive scholarship remain the same:
