The Journey

My name is Syed Muhammad Adnan Aslam, a student from Pakistan, coming from a small and remote area near Kot Addu where reaching school required travelling miles every day and where access to educational resources was extremely limited. I grew up with big dreams shaped by small surroundings. From PGC Kot Addu, with limited resources, uncertainties, and countless challenges,

In 2023, I was awarded the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship to pursue a Bachelor's degree in International Relations at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Hungary. Throughout my studies, I was nominated twice for the university's Excellence Award. My interest in international relations stems from my passion for diplomacy, global governance, public policy, and international cooperation. As my academic journey progressed, I became increasingly interested in criminology and criminal justice from a global perspective, which motivated me to pursue further studies in this field.

Educational Background

I am recently completed my Bachelor's degree in International Relations at ELTE, Hungary, with a 4.73/5.0 CGPA. Throughout my studies, I have focused on international politics, diplomacy, international law, security studies, and global governance. My strong academic performance, combined with research and leadership experiences, provided me with an excellent foundation for pursuing graduate studies in criminology, particularly in understanding transnational crime, justice systems, and international policy.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Universities?

I began preparing almost a year before the application deadlines. I carefully researched each programme, reviewed course structures, faculty expertise, and research opportunities, and only applied to universities that matched my academic interests and long-term career goals. I also attended webinars, connected with current students and alumni, and spent considerable time refining my application materials.

I primarily relied on official university websites, the Erasmus Mundus Catalogue, the European Commission website, LinkedIn, scholarship platforms, YouTube webinars, and alumni experiences. Networking with current students and previous scholarship recipients also helped me better understand the application process and programme expectations.

I took the IELTS Academic examination and achieved an overall band score of 7.0. To prepare, I practiced using Cambridge IELTS books, official practice tests, YouTube tutorials, and regular speaking and writing exercises. Consistent practice over several months helped me improve my overall performance.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Scholarship?

I spent significant time developing my application, particularly my motivation letter. I revised it multiple times, sought feedback from mentors, and ensured that it reflected both my academic achievements and long-term career goals. I also highlighted my leadership experiences, international exposure, volunteer work, and policy-related activities to demonstrate my commitment to making a meaningful contribution to society.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing the Native Languages?

Academically, no. Since the programme is fully taught in English, students can successfully complete their studies without knowing Hungarian. However, learning some basic Hungarian is beneficial for daily life, communication, and cultural integration.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it demonstrated consistency across academics, leadership, and international engagement. Besides maintaining a high CGPA, I served as a Climate Pact Ambassador for the European Commission, represented youth perspectives at the United Nations Human Rights Council, worked as a Youth Delegate with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), participated in conferences at the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, completed international internships, and remained actively involved in mentoring and volunteering. Instead of presenting isolated achievements, my application showed a clear long-term commitment to international cooperation, justice, and public policy. I believe admissions committees value applicants who combine academic excellence with meaningful real-world impact.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Looking back, I would have started preparing my applications even earlier and requested feedback from a broader range of professors, mentors, and scholarship recipients. I also would have applied to additional competitive scholarships earlier in the application cycle. Every application, whether successful or unsuccessful, helped me improve my writing, interview skills, and overall understanding of the admissions process.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My biggest advice is to start preparing early and be intentional with every application. Do not apply simply because a scholarship is fully funded apply because the programme genuinely matches your interests and career goals. Build your academic profile consistently, but also invest time in leadership, volunteering, research, internships, and community service. Develop meaningful experiences that demonstrate impact rather than collecting certificates. Finally, never let rejection discourage you. Every rejection teaches valuable lessons, and persistence is often what separates successful applicants from others. Stay curious, seek feedback, believe in your potential, and continue improving. The right opportunity will eventually come.
