My name is Jean de Dieu SEMUHUNGU, and I am from Rwanda. I have always been passionate about social development, particularly in the areas of social protection, inclusion, and community development. This passion inspired me to pursue higher education so that I could gain the knowledge and skills needed to contribute more effectively to improving the lives of vulnerable people.

I pursued a Master's degree in Social Protection at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (Germany), specializing in Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities. I chose this field because I believe that effective social protection systems are essential for reducing poverty, promoting social justice, and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Scholarship Details

After completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work: Welfare and Social Development at the Catholic University of Rwanda, I was awarded a scholarship to study at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in Germany. The scholarship covered my tuition and provided financial support for my studies and living expenses, allowing me to focus on my academic and professional development.

Educational Background

Before beginning my master's degree, I completed my undergraduate studies in Social Work: Welfare and Social Development and gained professional experience working in social development and humanitarian programs in Rwanda. My academic background, together with practical experience in social protection and community development, prepared me well for graduate studies in this field.

I found information through friends living in Germany who had previously studied abroad.

Yes. I met the English language requirements of the program. I prepared by practicing English regularly, reviewing sample questions, and improving my academic writing and communication skills.

I had a clear vision of how the master's degree would help me contribute to strengthening social protection systems in Rwanda and support vulnerable communities. My commitment to serving society and promoting inclusion was evident throughout my application.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were applying again, I would begin the preparation process even earlier. Starting earlier provides enough time to strengthen application documents, request recommendation letters, and carefully review every requirement before submission.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is to start preparing early, carefully read every application requirement, and never underestimate the importance of a well-written motivation letter. Demonstrate not only your academic achievements but also your leadership, community involvement, and future career goals. Apply even if you think your chances are small; you may be surprised by the outcome. Finally, remain patient, persistent, and confident throughout the process.
