The university has been associated with several major developments in Chinese higher education, including early graduate education and programs for gifted young students.
3. Central South University
Located in Hunan Province, Central South University was formed in April 2000 through the merger of Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway University, and Central South University of Technology. The university is located near Yuelu Mountain in Changsha and is known for strengths in engineering, medicine, materials science, transportation, and related fields. The Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1920 and maintains campuses in Harbin, Weihai, and Shenzhen. In ShanghaiRanking’s 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, HIT ranked second globally in mechanical engineering, reflecting its strong international profile in engineering-related fields. 9. Zhengzhou University
Zhengzhou University is a large comprehensive university in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. 12. Huazhong University of Science and Technology
Huazhong University of Science and Technology was formed in 2000 through the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute. Located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, HUST is known for its large green campus. China Daily reports that HUST covers more than 460 hectares and has 72% greenery coverage, earning it the nickname “University in the Forest.” The university has strengths across engineering, medicine, science, management, and the humanities.
13. Fudan University
Located in Shanghai, China’s largest city, Fudan University was established in 1905 as Fudan Public School. The university describes itself as the first institution of higher education founded by a Chinese person. Fudan has four campuses in Shanghai: Handan, Fenglin, Jiangwan, and Zhangjiang. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University, which later became part of Fudan’s medical education system. Today, Fudan is widely recognized as one of China’s leading comprehensive research universities.
14. Southeast University
Southeast University traces its origins to 1902 and is located in the ancient capital city of Nanjing. In May 1988, the university resumed the name Southeast University. It has developed into a comprehensive and research-oriented university with strong engineering disciplines. Its motto is “Strive for Perfection,” and the university has notable strengths in architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, transportation, electronics, and information technology.
15. Renmin University of China
Renmin University of China, often called RUC or Renda, was founded in 1937 and acquired its present name in 1950. The university is located in Beijing and is especially well known for humanities and social sciences. RUC states that it holds a pioneering and foundational position in the development of humanities and social sciences in modern China, with strengths in fields such as economics, law, Marxist theory, journalism, public administration, and sociology.
